Suurtoripäivä in Saarijärvi

Dates: - Mon, 7 Sept 2026, 9:00–16:00 The market square is filled with vendors as the Suomen Tapahtumatrio Oy's Big Market Day returns to the town once again. The Big Market Day is a familiar, pleasant market event that has been held for many years, where about 20 market vendors serve customers. The Big Market Day is, as the name suggests, larger than the regular market days in many places, but smaller than a full-scale market. That is why we have gathered this group of our own vendors selling a variety of products, so that we can offer you as diverse a selection as possible. Frans “Fransu” Toikkanen (1926–2008) was a peasant who became a leading figure in contemporary Finnish graphic art scene in the 1970s after making his breakthrough with his cat mezzotints at the Florence International Biennale in 1972. The Saarijärvi Museum’s 'Fransu 100' anniversary exhibition presents a cross-section of Toikkanen’s diverse production from the 1950s to the 21st century; nature themed woodcuts, cat mezzotints, sign serigraphy, unique wood and bronze sculptures, and rare gems, Fransu’s never-before-seen works. The artist’s collection of objects from the 1950s onwards is also on display: tools, sketchbooks, photographs and letters. The 100th anniversary exhibition delves deeper into Fransu's life, his portrait and his artistry than ever before. The works in the Fransu 100 anniversary exhibition have been collected from the Saarijärvi Museum, the Saarijärvi Mannila Art Foundation, the Beda, Katri and Aune Herala Foundation, the Frans Toikkanen estate, other museums and private collections. Klemola graduated from the Finnish Academy of Arts in 1959 as a painter. However, she is known as a graphic artist for her woodcuts that glow with strong, energetic colors. An encounter with a fellow Ateneum student, Frans “Fransu” Toikkanen, in the late 1950s brought Anneli to Saarijärvi in Central Finland, to Frans’s home farm in 1960. This began the eventful artistic life of the artist couple Ansu and Fransu, which is highlighted in the exhibition especially in Klemola’s more personal works. The exhibition is a cross-section of Klemola’s artistic career, which in addition to color woodcuts, also features rarer works, such as paintings, ink drawings and metal graphics. Klemola's works have been brought together for the exhibition from the Saarijärvi Museum, the Saarijärvi Mannila Art Foundation, the Beda, Katri and Aune Herala Foundation, Anneli Klemola, and private collections.
