Amaze! Tales and Magic of Circus is a comprehensive exhibition on Finnish circus and its history. Circus enchants, entertains, and captivates its audience with the antics of clowns, the bravery of circus artists, the sparkle of sequins, the scent of popcorn, magic, and masterful skills.
Circus is an art form where the impossible becomes reality and the audience can feel the thrill in their bones. Acrobatics, magic, and humor speak without words, and clowns remind people of their humanity.
The story of Finnish circus began in the 19th century, when international troupes started visiting Finland. Finnish circus is the world of legendary personalities, international adventures, the joy of circus enthusiasts, absurd storytelling — and thousands of hours of sweaty practice.
Since the 1990s, new ideas have emerged alongside traditional circus: influences have been drawn from contemporary dance, popular culture, music, and visual arts. In the 2000s, contemporary circus groups and artists have successfully taken their performances to stages around the world, making Finland an internationally respected country in the field of contemporary circus.
The characters and stories of Finnish circus history, traditional circus, and contemporary circus run side by side throughout the exhibition.

Barley Porridge and Crispbread – The Story of Finnish School Meals
Barley Porridge and Crispbread – The Story of Finnish School Meals takes visitors on a journey more than a century back in time. Free meals were originally introduced to encourage children from low-income families to attend school and to secure their nutritional needs during the school day.
In 1943, Finland expanded the free school meal into a universal right for every pupil – the first country in the world. School meals became a symbol of the Finnish welfare state and its commitment to equality, wellbeing and learning.
The exhibition highlights the history of school meals and the memories connected to them across different decades. Over more than 80 years, the free meal has touched countless Finns and shaped their understanding of community, nutrition and everyday school life.
From humble porridges to today’s responsible, nutritious and socially significant meal service, the journey has been long. The exhibition is produced in collaboration by The Finnish Museum of Agriculture and the Hotel and Restaurant Museum.

The 1960s and 1970s in Finland were a time of change and development.
The standard of living rose, Finland became more urbanised and youth culture grew stronger. The restaurant scene was also undergoing changes.
How did the changes in society affect restaurants and their customers?
A photographic exhibition based on the collections of the Hotel and Restaurant Museum takes a look at the turbulent decades from the perspective of restaurants.

Food and drink culture is never permanent, it continues to change all the time. It is influenced by individuals, communities, society, and the state.
The exhibition takes you to places where food and drink culture is formed and modified.
People all have their own personal perspective on food and drink culture, that is, on eating and drinking and everything that goes with them. As the saying goes, “there’s no accounting for taste”. However, discussion is in order anyway!

Film still photographs, colloquially known as simply stills, are not freeze frames from the film reel, but rather photographers' reinterpretations of scenes. The still photographer steps in with their camera once the scene has been shot.
The still photographer's goal is to capture the atmosphere of the scene — and at times of the entire film — into a single image.
Marja-Leena “Malla” Hukkanen (b. 1959) has photographed film stills for more than four decades. She is one of the few Finnish photographers who have devoted their entire career to film still photography.
Hukkanen is especially known for her collaboration with director Aki Kaurismäki. Altogether, she has photographed stills for over one hundred Finnish films.
Hukkanen's photographs demonstrate that film stills are not merely a by-product of a film, but an independent art form that merges the frozen moment of photography with the vitality of cinema into a unique visual language.
The exhibition presents Hukkanen’s series Shadows in Paradise, based on Aki Kaurismäki’s films. Also on display are stills and behind-the-scenes photos from films selected by Hukkanen herself from across her career.

Helmikuussa 2021 Me Naiset -lehti julkaisi Iiris Elena Rusista haastattelun Toisintekijä -juttusarjaan. Haastattelussa keskityttiin Rusiin kuvataiteilijana, joka harjoittaa seksityötä.
Haastattelua on sittemmin jaettu eri sosiaalisen median alustoilla, joilla se on kerännyt runsaasti kommentteja liittyen muun muassa Rusin ulkonäköön, haluttavuuteen palveluntarjoajana sekä Rusin moraalikäsitykseen.
Rusin edellinen näyttelykokonaisuus Killer Queen käsitteli seksin myymistä taiteilijan omasta näkökulmasta alalla toimivana tekijänä. Valokuvataiteen museon gallerian kokonaisuus jatkaa aiheen tutkimista osallistamalla keskusteluun myös muita erotiikkapalveluita tarjoavia työntekijöitä ja peilaamalla edelleen aiemman näyttelyn teemoja, ja yleisön suhtautumista aiheeseen.

The evening brings together works by choreographers from three generations: Carolyn Carlson’s solo Room 7, Tero Saarinen’s duet Garden, and Sonya Lindfors’ group work Wild Is the Wind. Despite the choreographers’ differing aesthetics, the works are united by a reflection on humanity and by strong performances shaped by distinct individual voices.
Tero Saarinen returns to the stage in Room 7, a new solo created for him by Carolyn Carlson. Having built a significant international career as a solo dancer, Saarinen dives into archetypes of the mind through the absurd and Carlson’s signature poetic expression.
In Saarinen’s new duet Garden, two people construct their shared way of being in a world where the connection to nature has become blurred. In the piece, the garden appears as a metaphorical space in which the audience observes, with a sense of wonder, the human relationship to environment, form, and time.
The evening’s premiere piece is a commission by Sonya Lindfors. Wild Is the Wind, which lends its name to the triple bill, is Lindfors’ major scale work featuring TSC dancers alongside dancers Akim Bakhtaoui, Marlon Moilanen, Axelle Munezero, and Maele Cheza Sabuni as well as live trumpeter Devina Boughton.

Trajectories explores weaving as queering spatiality. The praxis takes broken cabling and uses self-taught basket weaving techniques to transform a two-dimensional landscape into three-dimensional places.
Deleuze and Guattari refer to weaving as the most striated - or controlled/measured - form of “nomad art” as there is no space to aerate within the confines of a tightly woven square. As described in A Thousand Plateaus (1980), nomad art applies the characteristics of land and space to textile formats.
The sculptures aim to reclaim what is described as a striated and transform it into something smooth or nomadic where it can be permeated, creating cracks where spatial tensions emerge. The materials address a feeling of artificiality in relation to cultural identity as well as an interdependence between digital places, cultural heritage, queerness, and community.
Trajectories refers to nomadic trajectories described by Delueze and Guattari where vectors, such as hurricanes, travel across striated or smooth planes. The works are then observing blurred lines between striated and smooth spatialities, the cracks within them, as well as the vectors that travel through them.

The Pond is a bittersweet story about growing up and having the courage to be yourself.
This wordless performance tells the story of a chicken named Candy who dreams of being an elegant swan. Inspired by her dreams, Candy takes the audience on a journey to a world filled with imagination, where play and creativity help us understand emotions and ourselves on an ever-deeper level.
The performance combines clowning and dance, and it also addresses difficult topics with gentleness and humour.

Orpheus in Underworld is a contemporary version of the Orphean myth that fuses opera, dance, extended reality, motion capture and interactive technologies. This world premiere is co-produced by two Canadian companies: re:Naissance Immersive and the contemporary dance company, Belle Spirale.
Through an immersive exploration of digital and carbon existences, the performance dissolves the binaries people are bound to from birth until death, and strums the threads between heaven and hell, male and female, maker and muse, performer and audience.
The story follows O, a trans person whose sense of gender and identity is expansive — yet who has lived a fractured life. Haunted by past experiences and personhoods that have been suppressed, repressed, or condemned, Orpheus journeys to Underworld, an online virtual world, where they find the opportunity to express themself through avatars in extended reality.
As O navigates the fluid landscapes of identity and technology, Orpheus in Underworld challenges to question: how does one navigate the vastness of identities in spaces that resist multiplicity?

BabyTango combines a performance for babies with a dance session for babies and their companions.
Tango is feeling, listening, a shared flow of movement, surrendering, leading and being led. At BabyTango’s core is the relationship between the baby and the parent or another significant adult. It is intense, lovely, exciting, delicate and unique. It is a state of non-verbal understanding, where movements, gestures, emotions and sounds express what is needed – when there are no common words yet. BabyTango is a session of interaction and love.
The performance is followed by a shared dance session for the child and the adult. You do not need any previous dancing experience to participate.

The winter circus experience for the whole family takes on a journey through a world of colours.
Winter Circus Colour is a playful and visual contemporary circus performance that explores themes of individuality and togetherness through the language of colours.
The performance opens a window onto a captivating world where peculiar characters live in their own monochromatic realities. What happens when an unexpected situation causes these lives and colours to collide?
This year, the soulful rhythms of jazz and the percussive sound of tap dancing guide the show. World-class circus artists and dancers delight us with their skill.
The circus acts include floor, aerial and pair acrobatics, inventive juggling and unorthodox sleepwalking parkour, among others. Winter Circus Colour will feature for the first time the exciting freestyle highline and the impressive acrobatics of Chinese lion dance.
The fans of the Winter Circus’s long-time star, the Rat, will be thrilled to learn it has an important, surprising and mischievous role in the performance. The show’s enchanting atmosphere is completed by the vibrant live music played by Hurja Jazz Trio.
