Over the last decade, Bad Girls Groove (“The Bads”) have built an enviable reputation for their high octane funky soul performances both in the UK (Hard Rock Cafe, Blues Kitchens, Crypt - St Martins Trafalgar Sq., Pizza Express, Pheasantry, Boisdale etc etc) and in Europe, particularly at the Fete de la St Louis in sunny Sete in South of France (where they are again headed just a fortnight after Soul Mama) and Cork Guinness Jazz Festival. In addition to top vocal talent, the Bads now feature some truly impressive session musicians, starting in the steaming ”Engine Room”, with extraordinary in demand drummer Jamie Murray (Robben Ford band and Gretsch drums and Zildjian endorsee) and definitely “the drummer to watch”, in the opinion of Rhythm Magazine, and Trev Boxall on bass who according to London Jazz News “…brings us squarely back into the territory of 70’s jazz-funk “. Both Jamie and Trevor pretty much live at Ronnie Scott’s. Sax fans should check out Trimmer, our horn player with tone to die for, a BA in Jazz Studies and MA in Electro Acoustic composition, who survived endless gigs in dodgy European clubs and bars with the late Ginger Baker (who still owes him £40). Keeping things lively is the constantly in motion Alberto Manuzzi, Italian keyboard wizard with an MA in Musicology. Roger Bolt on trusty Telecaster has no degrees in anything but has played more gigs than he cares to remember from Sydney to St Albans. The gorgeous Bads upfront – have built a repertoire of soulful tunes that sidesteps the obvious and allows them to show off their vocal and dancing talents, fine-tuned perfect harmonies and - above all – their sheer joy and enthusiasm at performing for – and getting on down with - appreciative audiences everywhere. It was born out of Incognito founder and leader Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick’s love of soulful Jazz Funk instrumentals and the playing of legendary guitarist Jim Mullen, who he had followed as a teenager. Citrus Sun, a band formed in the late 1990s, play music from their latest jazz and soul tribute album, 'Anaconga'. The band is a passion project of Bluey's, known for his work with Incognito. Citrus Sun is essentially the Incognito rhythm section, featuring Bluey, bassist Francis Hylton, drummer Francesco Mendolia, percussionist João Caetano, and guitarist Jim Mullen, along with various guest artists. The band focuses on the instrumental aspects of jazz and soul, honouring classic pieces like Maynard Ferguson's Mister Mellow, Bobby Caldwell's Down for the Third Time, Ronnie Laws' Mystic Brew, and Erykah Badu's Honey, while also introducing new material such as Santiago, Hard Boiled, Expansions & Visions, and In Search of Blues Note. Please take a moment to explore our menu. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Black Slate are one of the UK’s most respected and influential reggae bands, formed in London in 1974 by musicians from England, Jamaica, and Anguilla. Emerging from the vibrant British reggae movement, the band quickly established themselves as a formidable live act, touring extensively around London and backing legendary Jamaican artists such as Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson, and Ken Boothe during their UK appearances. Their reputation soon translated into success of their own, beginning with the socially conscious reggae hit “Sticks Man,” which gained international attention across Europe. The band’s breakthrough came in 1980 with the release of the powerful Rastafarian anthem “Amigo,” which climbed to No. 9 on the UK Singles Chart and became a defining track of British roots reggae. This success led to releases on Ensign Records, including the dub album Ogima and the acclaimed studio album Sirens in the City, alongside further fan favourites such as “Boom Boom.” Between 1979 and 1985, Black Slate released a run of influential albums that cemented their status as pioneers of the UK reggae sound. After a lengthy hiatus, Black Slate returned in the 2010s with renewed purpose, releasing the World Citizen EP and later the albums Now and Then and Peaceful Demonstration on their own TCD Records label. They toured across the UK, Europe, and the United States, bringing their timeless sound to new generations of fans. We are excited to have Snake Davis return to Soul Mama with his 4 piece band, with guitar, bass guitar and drums. Something for everybody, from floaty to dance-able, from soul, northern soul, through pop to jazz and world, original material and classic sax pieces such as ‘Baker Street’ and ‘Night Train’ He is one of the most in demand rock soul and jazz sax players in the world, widely known for his solos on tracks such as Lisa Stansfield’s “Change”, M-People’s “Search For A Hero” and “Moving On Up” Klingande’s ‘Jubel’ and Take That “A Million Love Songs”. He has played and recorded with artists ranging from James Brown to Tina Turner to Paul McCartney, The Eurythmics to Amy Winehouse. As a session player to the stars he plays arenas and stadiums, but his greatest love is to play intimate venues as himself, his own music choice with his favourite musicians. Previously vocalist for the Cimarons from 1970, he is best known as a lovers rock vocalist with hits such as "Paradise in Your Eyes", "Moi Emma Oh" and, in particular, "Dim The Lights" (1983), which saw Reid crowned as Britain's best reggae singer three years in a row after he went solo. Hailing from Jamaica, Winston Reedy is renowned as one of the most successful and popular UK-based Reggae singers. He’s a master of both roots and lovers genres. In the 1970s, he was lead vocalist with one of the UK’s top reggae bands, The Cimarons. The band made a trip to Jamaica in 1975 to record an album called On The Rock, and released a version of Bob Marley’s Talking Blues which went to number 1 in Jamaica. Playing with The Cimarons created the opportunity for Winston to work with some of the industry’s top names, including Jimmy Cliff, Dennis Brown, Dennis Alcapone, The Pioneers and Paul McCartney, to name a few. Winston Reedy has played at venues such as Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall, and Wembley Stadium, alongside acts such as Bob Dylan, Santana and UB40.
