Marking the both the passing of Rollins earlier this year, and the 70th anniversary of his iconic Saxophone Colossus album, Gary and Denys will be joined by Andrew McCormack (piano), and Rod Youngs (drums), as the explore his incredible musical legacy.
Discussing the impact that Rollins had on him as a musician, Crosby explains "Sonny Rollins was more than the Saxophone Colossus; he was a colossus of imagination and invention. For me, his greatest lesson was that true artistry comes from having the courage to find your own voice."

Joe Herbert presents his new album, Blind Eyes, with an expanded line-up for one show. Expect an evening of adventurous genre-blurring compositions and high energy playing.
Joe Herbert is a guitarist and composer bringing together the rhythmic language of contemporary jazz with the weight, atmosphere and darkness of grunge and rock. His music is built on deep grooves and an instinct for spontaneity, drawing as much from Radiohead, Jeff Buckley and Nirvana as it does from London’s jazz scene.
Recorded with long-standing collaborators Toby Yapp (bass) and Josh Walker-Martin (drums), Joe’s second album explores the guitar trio as both a live band and a studio project. Layered guitars, subtle textures and carefully shaped dynamics sit alongside improvisation to create a sound that feels expansive without losing the immediacy of three musicians playing together.
The music moves between tightly constructed compositions and open improvisation. Influences from modern jazz, rock, funk and ambient music meet in a distinctive band sound.
At the heart of the project are musicians who have developed their own musical language over years of playing together. Whether in the studio or on stage, the focus remains the same: making music that is direct and adventurous.

Harry Baker is an award-winning British pianist and arranger active at the highest levels of both jazz and classical performance. Noah Ojumu is a London-based jazz drummer and composer whose quintet is defined by rhythmic melodies and dynamic interplay. For this gig, he's written a brand-new set of music composed specifically with these musicians in mind. His compositions draw on the groove-oriented music he grew up with, merged with a later passion for jazz and the avant-garde, resulting in a vibrant, exploratory sound.
Alongside his own project, he has performed with various ensembles, including Koller/Kofi/Gourlay/Ojumu Plays Monk, Mark Kavuma Quartet, and Nu Civilisation Orchestra. Noah’s compositional and improvisational approach has been particularly influenced by the mentorship of Tom Challenger, playing in Challenger’s Brass Mask and Build a Band.

Airborn is the new project led by flutist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Eddie Parker. A founder member of the acclaimed British jazz orchestra Loose Tubes, Parker’s early career led him to collaborate with many future musical luminaries including Django Bates, John Parricelli, Iain Ballamy and many more. Many will know Eddie's work in the 1990s with South African piano genius Bheki Mseleku. Eddie is also a regular member of the Will Gregory Moog Ensemble. More recently, his Debussy Mirrored Ensemble have gained much positive attention for their unique compositions and performances. Sarost is a trio comprising Mark Sanders Percussion, Paul Rogers Custom 7 String Bass and Larry Stabbins Saxophones and G "Sol" Clarinet. Tonight, they celebrate the release of their new album on Ogun Records "The Granite Variations".
Three veteran, virtuoso improvisors who have worked together in various combinations for over 40 years, this trio has an astonishing combined legacy having shaped and been a part of and still shaping the British Free Jazz/Improv scene.
During a 50+ year career across the spectrum of music saxophonist Larry Stabbins has worked with most of the important figures at the cutting edge of European Jazz and Improvisation from Mike Westbrook to Keith Tippett and Tony Oxley and Germany’s Peter Brotzmann, as well as with Robert Wyatt and Jerry Dammers Spatial AKA. Alongside this he played in the seminal pop group Weekend and formed Working Week with guitarist Simon Booth, a project that took a melange of latin, soul and jazz into the world of pop and dance music.
Since then, different projects of his own across the range of his interests have varied from totally improvised small groups and solo performances to “Jazz Rap” ( QRZ?) in the early 1990s, “FreeJazz TechnoFunk” (Game Theory) early 2000s, “Psychedelic Hip Hop” ( Stonephace) and freeish “Spiritual Jazz” (Stonephace Stabbins with Zoe Rahman) around 2010. And currently in a quartet “137”with Adrian Utley and Jim Barr of the cult band “Portishead” and Percussionist Sebastian Rochford.

Join us in an evening of varied performances to commemorate the unique South African jazz singer songwriter and composer Estelle Kokot. A regular fixture at the Vortex and a multi collaborator with many like minded artists, Estelle composed unique powerful, political and socially conscious songs. In lockdown she developed instrumental soundscapes to the poetry of percussionist, composer and poet, Eugene Skeef. Performers will include Eugene Skeef, Cleveland Watkiss, Christine Tobin, Phil Robson, Jenni Roditi, Kate Shortt, Claude Deppa plus more.

We both felt that the time had arrived to play music of our choice together with some of the finest jazz musicians working in Britain today. As a result Still Waters is now one of the most accomplished and creative bands around.
Although a classic quintet of two front line and rhythm, Still Waters plays radical and original music, ranging from gentle, quietly pastoral and melodic music, reflecting the band’s name, through to dynamic, free improvisation.
I am immensely proud of the band. The main thing to say about it is that it is a BAND and not just a collection of individual musicians; in other words the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The level of creativity, adventure and interplay on gigs never ceases to astonish me; no two gigs are ever the same and this is truer of Still Waters than of any other band I’ve ever played in.
Dave Green, is without doubt the foundation of Still Waters. He has a way of finding the right thing to do at exactly the right time. Whatever else goes on around him he always keeps it right there, allowing everybody else maximum freedom.
Paul Clarvis is the most idiosyncratic, original and creative drummer in British jazz who, together with pianist Barry Green’s ability to move from straight ahead playing to wayward free improvisation, makes the rhythm section an absolute joy. I love its ability to go anywhere it chooses to go.

Queer Jazz exists to platform, nurture and celebrate the emerging queer jazz scene. Programmed by Tina Edwards and Arowah, they have put together an exciting monthly programme of innovative LGBTQI+ artists at The Vortex Jazz Club, supported by Arts Council England.

The Olga Amelchenko Quartet presents a new repertoire from the upcoming album Touching the Invisible. Contemporary jazz combining memorable melodies, strong grooves and open improvisation.
Olga Amelchenko is a Paris-based saxophonist and composer.
She began singing in a choir at the age of 5, and two years later started studying piano and the dombra.Between 2003 and 2006, she studied choral conducting at the Conservatory of Abakan before transitioning to the saxophone. In 2006, she moved to Novosibirsk, where she studied at the conservatory until 2010. In 2012, Olga moved to Germany and continued her musical education in Cologne for two years. She then moved to Berlin, studying at the Jazz Institut Berlin from 2014 to 2019, where she earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. After graduating in 2019, she moved to Paris, where she is now based. She is active on the French and international jazz scene as a bandleader, sidewoman, and educator.
Olga regularly performs with various ensembles and leads two projects: the Olga Amelchenko Quartet and Helicon.
Her debut album Shaping Motion was released in 2018, followed by Live at Loft in 2020 and Slaying the Dream in 2023. Her latest album, Howling Silence, released on July 11, 2025, on Edition Records, marks a pivotal moment in her evolving artistic journey.

On 1 September 1961 Impulse! Records released John Coltrane’s first large-scale recording, Africa/Brass, featuring his working quintet including Eric Dolphy, framed by a large ensemble of brass instruments. As Gil Evans was unavailable, Dolphy and McCoy Tyner created the arrangements, expanding the freedom of the small group into a larger aural palette. While the arrangements by the young players demonstrated more aspiration than experience, Coltrane and group's playing was truly inspired. LJO director Scott Stroman has revisited and expanded the arrangements for jazz orchestra, adding an orchestral version of Coltane’s Naima, recorded around the same time.

Continuing Laura Jurd's celebration for Miles Davis' Centenary, we are very pleased to welcome Trumpeter Klara Devlin and her quartet performing original compositions and arrangements inspired by bebop, blues and free jazz.
19-year-old jazz trumpet player, Klara Devlin, was a 2024 BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist, currently studying jazz at the Royal Academy of Music. She began playing trumpet at five and discovered jazz at eight. The Klara Devlin Quartet has appeared across numerous jazz venues and festivals, including Ronnie Scott’s Late Late show, The Jazz Café, Jazz In The Round, Pizza Express Soho, JazzLive at the Crypt and performances at the Brick Lane, We Out Here and Brecon Jazz festivals.

Pianist Sultan Stevenson is one of the fastest emerging young artists on the London jazz scene and soon to be Europe. Sultan is the current BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artist for 2026 - 2028, an award that reflects the recognition of his enormous talent. Sultan is the winner of The UK Parliamentary Award for “Best Newcomer 2023”. To follow up, Sultan has been nominated for a Jazz FM Award 2025 in the category of Breakthrough Act of the Year.
As a teenager he has benefitted from the education of the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy and Tomorrow’s Warriors, following that, he graduated from The Guildhall School of Music in 2023.
However, he emerged on the scene in 2022, with a rapidly developing artistic voice. He started playing his own music alongside regular bandmates Jacob Gryn and Joel Waters. Jazz Re:freshed, The Jazz Cafe, The Vortex and The EFG London Jazz Festival are just some of the numerous places in which Sultan has wowed audiences. Sultan cites McCoy Tyner, Kenny Kirkland, Geri Allen and Ahmad Jamal as some of his biggest inspirations.

‘Bird Talk’ is a new album celebrating the eternal beauty of the language of Charlie Parker by producing new compositions based on the dadaist cut up technique used by William S. Burroughs.
Featuring Reece Soko-Fogg, Sam Eastmond, Nika Ticciati, Fergus Quill and Teruki Chan, The idea of this project came from Fergus exploring ways you could present the work of Charlie Parker in ways that felt innovative and defiant of attempts to make his work into a museum piece but also in a way that showed the inherent beauty of the language he left for generations of improvisers.
Fergus decided to cut up his copy of ‘The Charlie Parker Omnibook’ and reassemble it to produce new music without changing a note of the music of Charlie Parker. Sam Eastmond and Reece Soko-Fogg also contributed compositions using this technique. The album was recorded in one day in one room with one mic per person (including drums) and no amplification in an attempt to get closer to the environment Bird was in when he produced his masterpieces.

Formed in 2021 by Iranian composer and multi-instrumentalist, Ashkan Layegh, Phemo Quartet aims to broaden the spectrum of live-action interplay through a highly-detailed score.

Phemo Quartet won the second prize at the 16th European Young Artists’ Jazz Award at the 2026 Burghausen Jazz Festival. They performed alongside the London Sinfonietta for the premiere of Ephemerality and Recurrence— Layegh’s recent multi-media project commissioned by London Sinfonietta— as part of the 2025 EFG Jazz Festival. They premiered their debut project Anti-Revelation (2022)— an hour-long 5-movement cycle— at the Vortex Jazz Club. They also shared the stage at the Kings Place with ECM recording artist, Nik Bärtsch.
For this concert, celebrating the release of their debut album ‘Anti-Revelation’, Phemo Quartet will be joined by German pianist and composer Johanna Summer. Summer is praised for her open and flexible playing style and her ability to set classical music in an improvised context. Her first album, ‘Schumann Kaleidoscope’ dealt with compositions by Robert Schumann and was nominated for the German Jazz Prize in 2021.

Named after the forest near where Pat lived in Sweden, the album’s compositions conjure up a combination of tranquil beauty and untamed wildness. Percussionist and drummer Eddie Prevost is a key figure in the free improvisation and avant-garde music scenes. Best known as a co-founder of the long-running improvised music group AMM, his career also includes work as a writer and educator.
Double bassist Olie Brice is an improviser, and composer recognized as a major figure in the UK’s creative jazz and free improvisation scenes. His musical style is noted for its ability to integrate compositional ideas within improvised and free jazz settings.

Trumpeter Hugh Pascall returns to the Vortex with his dynamic quintet. Having toured together for several years, they perform music from his acclaimed ’25 album Viewfinder alongside brand-new originals. Expect melodic, exploratory grooves and atmospheric ballads from the unique voices of these special musicians.
Praised throughout the jazz press as “an outstanding soloist” with “the most beautiful, elegant and melodic delivery”, Hugh Pascall has developed a highly individual sound. Marked by “remarkable fluency and assurance”, his playing combines lyrical invention and warmth with a vibrant, contemporary approach to post-bop jazz.
An award-winning trumpeter and composer, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the Paris Conservatoire. In February 2023 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in recognition of his significant contribution to UK jazz.

A weekly session on Sunday evenings, hosted by four of London’s finest: guitarist Nick Costley-White, Trumpeter Sean Gibbs, pianist Rick Simpson and tenor saxophonists and Riley Stone-Lonergan, each one hosting one session on rotation.
If you’re an instrumentalist – we can’t wait to welcome you back to the club – you can attend for free if you’re planning on playing with the house band. No need to book in advance!
