This show combines storytelling, mask and stand-up comedy to explore the everyday life of a boy growing up in Jenin in Occupied Palestine, who, like every child in the world, just wants to play and have fun. Following invasion in 2002, a German artist created an artwork with the kids of Jenin. They built a horse out of metal and debris from the invasion. The people of Jenin placed this statue in the centre of the city where it stood for 20 years. In October 2023, an Israeli army bulldozer entered the camp and the horse was ripped from its place. Born in Shantalla, Galway city, Mary has made some of the most uncompromising, wholly personal, and universal music by any Irish artist. While her roots are in jazz and blues – Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith are among her inspirations – pop, rock, folk, and chanson (Edith Piaf is also a touchstone) influences also appear in her work. Now, the next chapter of her distinguished career finds her exploring a little known side of the music of Peggy Lee. Never one to sit still, Mary is now planning her most ambitious project to date. While she has covered Billie Holiday, Joy Division, and The Blue Nile in the past, she intends to reimagine the album Peggy Lee made with the pioneering rock’n’roll songwriters Lieber and Stoller.

Joyce’s collection of short stories provides vivid ‘slices of life’ of early 20th century Dublin. Against the backdrop of a society in paralysis, a pair of Dublin lives are revealed in stark, sometimes brutal, scenes. In Counterparts, an ungainly, bad-tempered law clerk is determined to have a heavy night’s drinking, while in A Little Cloud, a sensitive soul is embittered by a meeting with an old university friend back from London. The stories are populated with an array of colourful characters who remain entirely contemporary. Performed by Jim Roche and Liam Hourican in the iconic setting of the Joyce Centre’s Georgian drawing room, this is an exquisite, intimate study of Joyce’s Dublin and its lives of quiet desperation.

One of the largest exhibitions of Souter’s work to date, it features works-on-paper from the 1950s as well as one of her final paintings, alongside previously unseen archival materials and sketches by the British-born Irish artist.
