Support program for the staff of the photo library at Saint-Joseph University in Beirut (Lebanon)
Dates: - Tue, Sep 1, 2026, 9:00 AM–6:00 PM Since 2022, the National Heritage Institute, in collaboration with the French National Archives and Saint-Joseph University, has been carrying out actions aimed at inventorying, Classify and digitize documents in order to prevent the risk of disappearance and preserve them so that they can be used, studied and shared. In recent years, the photo library has become a reference point and has received many donations of archives and photographs due to all the work done. As part of a new ALIPH support targeted at the emergency need, and following the armed conflict in Lebanon, which poses a security risk to collections that are already threatened, The INP and the Oriental Library of the USJ are engaged in a process of supporting the photo library for the creation and implementation of a safeguarding plan, which should result in missions between mid-2025 and mid-2027. The main objective is to deal with and anticipate the safeguarding of the archive funds and photographs in the photo library. The explosion on August 4, 2020 in the port of Beirut worsened the precarious state of preservation of the documents. In conditions of armed conflict, the security risk increased and the establishment of a safeguarding plan became extremely urgent on already threatened collections. The project aims to provide resources in terms of human resources and training to support the photo library in its plan.
