Join us at Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre this Science Week for an engaging talk exploring the unique biology of the platypus. Hear from a University of Sydney researcher as they uncover the secrets of peptide research and understanding platypus venom.The session includes a 20 minute presentation followed by a 10 minute Q&A.Presented by the ARC Centre of Excellence for Innovations in Peptide and Protein Science.About the Scientist:Adele Gonsalvez (PhD Student) is using a variety of 'omics resources to investigate the unique genes, peptides and traits of Australia's monotremes. This work particularly focuses on the characterisation and functional investigation of platypus venom and monotreme-specific genes, aiming to discover novel components and their functions to better understand these animals.Parking and facilities: Free public carparking. In this workshop, participants will explore expressive drawing techniques with artist Sandra Pearce, using ink, sticks, and experimental mark making. Seed pods and natural objects from local bushland will inspire a series of playful exercises designed to shift habits and spark new ways of seeing.All materials, including inks, sticks, brushes, watercolour paper, are provided.Requirements:Bring water and a snack if required as there are no food outlets on site.Arrive 5 minutes early for sign-in.What if it rains? Join this informative guided walk around the gentle 100m Tulla-yugaipa dhagun Track. Meaning 'place of useful plants', this short track showcases plants used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and colonial peoples. A volunteer guide will lead you around the trail to identify some of the featured native plants and other wetlands resources and explain some traditional uses.After the walk, visitors can enjoy other nearby walking tracks, relax in the picnic area, and visit Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre.Requirements: All children must be accompanied by an adult. Discover, learn and connect with the natural wonders of the environment at Bush Kindy.Bush Kindy is for children aged 3-5 years, alongside their parents and carers. Be immersed in the natural surroundings of the reserve as children build nature confidence and respect for the environment through bushwalks, exploration, story-time, art 'n' craft and much more.Bush Kindy sessions can go for roughly 45 minutes and will go ahead in light rain. Themes and activities vary each week.This activity is for the general public. If you are a daycare or vacation group interested in attending a similar activity, send an email.Booking requirements: Maximum 5 tickets. A ratio of 1 adult per 4 children is required. All adults and children (including infants) must have a ticket. As this event is popular and places limited, late arrival tickets will be forfeited to make way for available attendees. Please cancel online via Eventbrite if you cannot attend.Requirements on the day: Arrive minimum 10 minutes early to check in with staff at the centre. All children must be accompanied and directly supervised by an adult. Enjoy the display 'The Wetlands', by local artist Paper Hands, at Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre as part of the Community Art Wall.Paper Hands (Holly Nielson) is a Brisbane-based illustrator. She finds that "... art is a way for me to communicate, reflect and dance with this weird and wonderful life. My artwork is often exploring the power of regeneration, through the connection of nature and the individual."'The Wetlands' was inspired by the natural beauty of the Boondall Wetlands, a unique and significant nature reserve which encapsulates more than 1000 hectares of tidal flats, mangroves, saltmarsh, hypersaline and grassland flats, casuarinas, melaleuca, eucalypt and rainforest plants.This ongoing display can be viewed from May to September:Tuesday to Friday, 9am-4pmSaturday and Sunday, 9am-12pm.About the Community Art Wall:Located in the Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre, the Community Art Wall is a small, ongoing display which aims to celebrate and promote environmental awareness through art by featuring work from local artists and community groups that reflect environmental themes such as sustainability, biodiversity and connection to nature.If you are interested in displaying your art on the Community Art Wall, please see opportunities for artists.
