Join us at Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre this Science Week for a fascinating talk exploring the remarkable plant life of Karawatha Forest. Home to over 320 plant species, this unique area contains some of the last remaining wet heathlands and melaleuca wetlands in Brisbane.Discover how local plant species thrive in tough conditions like heat, drought and nutrient-poor soils, and uncover the hidden genetic adaptations that allow them to survive and flourish. Hear from a University of Queensland researcher as they reveal the science behind these resilient plants and why understanding them is key to protecting our unique natural areas.The session includes a 45 minute presentation followed by a 15 minute Q&A.Presented by The University of Queensland.About the scientist: Kath McLay is a PhD researcher at The University of Queensland. Her research explores how species adapt to survive in harsh environments, with a focus on the genetic changes that allow native plants to grow and thrive. By understanding how plants respond to environmental pressures, her work supports biodiversity conservation and climate resilience in Australia.Requirements:Arrive minimum 10 minutes early to check in with staff at the centre.Meeting point: Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre.Parking and facilities: Free public carparking. Bush Kindy is for children aged 3-5 years, alongside their parents and carers. Be immersed in the natural surroundings of the reserve as children build nature confidence and respect for the environment through bushwalks, exploration, story-time, art 'n' craft and much more.Bush Kindy sessions can go for roughly 45 minutes and will go ahead in light rain. Themes and activities vary each week.This activity is for the general public. If you are a daycare or vacation group interested in attending a similar activity, send an email.Booking requirements: Maximum 5 tickets as places are limited. A ratio of 1 adult per 4 children is required. All adults and children (including infants) must have a ticket. Please cancel via Eventbrite if you cannot attend. As this event is popular and places limited, late arrival tickets will be forfeited to make way for available attendees. Requirements: Arrive minimum 10 minutes early to check in with staff at the centre. All children must be accompanied and directly supervised by an adult. Wear a hat, sun-safe clothing, fully enclosed walking shoes (no thongs or open shoes please), sunscreen, and bring insect repellent. Suitable old clothes recommended for messy play. Water and a snack if required, as there are no food outlets on site.Note: All outdoor events are subject to weather and environmental conditions and may be cancelled on the day.

Our new community walking group is a relaxed, social way to explore Brisbane's beautiful parks and green spaces.Walking in a group is a safe and supportive way to explore bushland, especially for those who may be unfamiliar with the area or prefer not to walk alone. Along the way, you might pick up interesting facts about local flora, fauna, and history, while enjoying the many benefits of walking, from improved health, community connection, and time in nature.Requirements: Safety first! Please wear closed-in walking shoes, bring a water bottle, and dress in sun-protective clothing including a hat and sunscreen. Walks may include uneven terrain, uphill sections of the walk.Note: This walk may be cancelled if unsafe walking conditions arise on the day, including severe weather, extreme heat, or any other hazards that may impact participant safety.
