Join us at Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre this Science Week for a fascinating talk exploring the remarkable plant life of Karawatha Forest. Home to over 320 plant species, this unique area contains some of the last remaining wet heathlands and melaleuca wetlands in Brisbane.Discover how local plant species thrive in tough conditions like heat, drought and nutrient-poor soils, and uncover the hidden genetic adaptations that allow them to survive and flourish. Hear from a University of Queensland researcher as they reveal the science behind these resilient plants and why understanding them is key to protecting our unique natural areas.The session includes a 45 minute presentation followed by a 15 minute Q&A.Presented by The University of Queensland.About the scientist: Kath McLay is a PhD researcher at The University of Queensland. Her research explores how species adapt to survive in harsh environments, with a focus on the genetic changes that allow native plants to grow and thrive. By understanding how plants respond to environmental pressures, her work supports biodiversity conservation and climate resilience in Australia.Requirements:Arrive minimum 10 minutes early to check in with staff at the centre.Meeting point: Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre.Parking and facilities: Free public carparking. Public toilets next to the environment centre.
