The high-profile International Maj Lind Piano Competition will be bringing around 40 young keyboard virtuosi from all over the world to Helsinki in October 2027.
The lucky competition applicants will play a wide selection of familiar classical works, but also more recent repertoire.
The competition goes back a long way. It is named after its benefactress, Maria “Maj” Lind (née Kopjeff, 1876–1942), a keen amateur music-lover.
The first Maj Lind Competition in 1945 was a national one. It became international in 2002 and has been organised once every five years by the Sibelius Academy of Uniarts Helsinki. The International Maj Lind Piano Competition held in 2017 was won by US pianist Mackenzie Melemed.

The exhibition unfolds like a dream: fragmentary and wondrous, interweaving fantasy and reality. Meanings shift and shimmer, like in dreams themselves, which transcend everyday comprehension. Visitors encounter a space where the possible and impossible hover side by side, evoking experiences that words cannot fully capture.
The exhibition presents works from the Finnish National Gallery’s collection, which holds over 43,000 works in total. It features around 40 artists, including Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Riikka Anttonen, Milla Aska, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Bruce Nauman, Olli Lyytikäinen, Elina Merenmies, Pakui Hardware, and Cindy Sherman.

Kiasma Online Art is the web extension of Kiasma’s Collection. It is an internet experience and tribute to today’s online art-makers.
A growing amount of art is being created exclusively for online environments, social media platforms, blogs and mobile apps. Kiasma Online Art is a compendium of topical online works by contemporary artists.
The audience plays an active role in many of these works, which include everything from gaming-based art, a VR film and digital paintings to a Random Number Generator that writes poetry and a mixing platform inviting users to create their own soundscapes.
Kiasma Online Art takes the art beyond the walls of the museum, making the online collection accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere. It marks a paradigm shift in the way that art is created, presented and experienced. What happens when art is encountered not in a museum, but online? Is the experience entirely different when art is accessed via smartphone on a crowded bus or on the sofa at home? Can art spread in the form of internet memes?

This online exhibition explores ancient Greek tragedies performed on stage in Finland. It spans four decades, from the 1980s to 2013.
Within the timeline of this exhibition, more than twenty performances of Greek tragedies were staged in Finnish theatres reflecting an international trend.
The 2500 years old texts have lent themselves to a variety of experimentations in theatre aesthetics. The chorus, masks, texts in verse composition, and their timeless themes have challenged and inspired theatre artists.
The structure of the online exhibition follows that of the Theatre Museum exhibition (Tragedy in Time – Timeless Tragedy, 2013–14), which was divided into two main themes, Agora and Ecstasy. These themes are explored through photographic materials, video recordings, interviews, masks, programme leaflets, and tragedy voices i.e. text extracts.

The Angeloscope exhibition sheds light on people’s conceptions of angels through Hanne Kiiveri's photographic art and multidisciplinary research.
How to study and imagine angels? Do angels have gender? Are angels always good? Do humans turn into angels after death?
The exhibition offers insights into angelic notions by introducing visitors to the Whose Angels? research project, which revolves around photographic works by photographer Hanne Kiiveri.
They weave a tapestry of angelic notions by both the subjects photographed and those viewing the photographs; of references to art and cultural history; and of the efforts of a multidisciplinary research group headed by Professor of the Study of Religions Terhi Utriainen.
The exhibition demonstrates how the study of angelic images advances understanding of not only angelic notions, but also, more broadly, humanity, creativity, imagination and ways of knowing.
Inspired in 2020 by Professor Utriainen’s research journal ‘Enkeleitä työpöydällä’ (‘Angels on the desk’), Kiiveri created a piece entitled Wicca & Her Guardian. Kiiveri has also drawn ideas for her works, for example, from those of Irish mystic Lorna Byrne, and treasures of art history, including works by Hugo Simberg.

The Modern Classics series of exhibitions presents 20th-century artists from the Finnish National Gallery collections. The first artist to be featured in the series is Elga Sesemann.
Elga Sesemann’s (1922–2007) life story is an exceptional and interesting example of a professional woman artist making a career for herself in Finland.
The artist’s very first solo exhibition in Helsinki, in 1945, already drew the attention of critics and the art audience to her expressive style.
Sesemann’s artistic oeuvre is extensive, and she enjoyed an active career, with her expression constantly evolving, until the mid-1990s.

Mythical characters, for Karlson, are a vehicle for exploring questions that reason alone cannot answer. Prehistory, fossils, and archaeology also provide enduring inspiration. Humans and animals are united by instinct, a tenacious will to survive, and the ability to adapt – themes she consistently examines in her practice.
Karlson employs a diverse array of materials, including clay, concrete, and silicone, creating works that often retain a raw, unfinished quality. Many pieces are left unglazed, their surfaces rough, evoking processes of transformation and transition. Birds and snakes capable of shedding their skin are recurring motifs, symbolising continual renewal.
Tallinn-based Karlson has exhibited widely both in Estonia and internationally, including venues such as the Sapieha Palace Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius (2025), the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (2021), the KUMU Art Museum (2019–2020), and the Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig (2018). She also represented Estonia at the 2024 Venice Biennale.

Uniperformanssi kutsuu yleisön mukaansa matkalle unien myyttiseen, maagiseen maailmaan. Yleisöstä muutamalla halukkaalla on mahdollisuus kertoa unensa siemeneksi esitykselle ja kokea performanssi sen keskiöstä käsin.
Uni on aina syvästi henkilökohtainen, merkityksellisin oppaamme, ja samalla unessa on myös ihmiskunnan kollektiivinen, ikiaikainen viisaus. Uni avaa portin kirkkaampaan tietoisuuteen, laajempaan ymmärrykseen. Unessa puhuu syvin meissä.

Iida-Vilhelmiina Sinivalo is a Helsinki-based cellist and artistic researcher working at the intersection of classical music, contemporary performance, and improvisation. She collaborates actively with artists from diverse musical and artistic traditions in Finland and internationally, and has premiered numerous new works. Her work is guided by a deep interest in listening, and in exploring how the cello can become a voice across different forms of expression.
Sinivalo's solo cello programme explores the dialogue between sound and listening, bringing together contemporary works shaped by different musical traditions. Moving between composed and more open moments, the music reflects encounters across cultures and sound worlds. Through these pieces, the cello becomes a space for listening, where different influences meet, transform, and resonate.

Folk singer and multi-instrumentalist Geneviève Andræssen (aka Juniper & The Wolf ) weaves a delicate blend of traditional storytelling, original music, poetry and folk ballads, collected over nearly a decade of travel across Europe and North America. With performances known equally for spellbound silences as raucously singing crowds, Juniper & The Wolf will leave you quietly transformed—ready to run into the wilds, forge a new world empire, or delve headlong into the lesser-known histories of myth, music, folklore, and magic.
In this performance, Geneviève will be sharing a set of traditional ballads (long-form story-songs), folk dance tunes, and storytelling accompanied by the ethereal sounds of the Swedish nyckelharpa.

If you are not yet a full-blown organ music fan, you may well be after this concert. Austrian organist Stefan Donner presents a selection of classical favourites, luring the audience into the magic circle of the organ.
The iconic animated series Il était un fois… l’Homme traces the history of humans from the dawn of time to outer space, using as its title music Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. The virtuoso brilliance of Charles-Marie Widor’s Toccata, meanwhile, sends chills down the spine in a purely joyful sense.
These organ classics are followed by arrangements of orchestral classics. What do you think Edvard Grieg’s Morning Mood or In the hall of the Mountain King sound like on the largest modern concert organ in the world?

Breathing, electricity, and the vast architecture of the air are engaged in dialogue in Kimmo Pohjonen’s Hallowed Lungs – a work composed for accordion, organ and electronics.
The history of the instruments – the sanctity of the organ and the mundanity of the accordion – does not result in a contradiction in the composition but generates tension, thereby creating a new space.
Hallowed Lungs sanctifies what once was excluded, and carries a hope to breathe fresh air and a dream of peace. The collaboration of the trio Pohjola, Helenius and Norvio began with Ultra Organ, which premiered in 2017, and continues with Hallowed Lungs.

A joint performance by Olivier Latry and Shin-Young Lee, international organ royalty, playing the organ with four hands and feet! The first and last pieces on this dance-themed programme form a dramatic contrast.
The programme begins with an elegant French flavour in the form of a ballet opera by Jean-Philippe Rameau and ends with the most savage dance in the history of music, Igor Stravinsky’s Le sacre du printemps, where a young girl dances herself to death as an offering to the gods of spring.
The organ version of the piece, adapted from Stravinsky’s own piano arrangement, has enchanted critics worldwide.

Born in 2005, Jan Liebermann is a spectacular talent who has rapidly risen to become one of the brightest stars on the organ firmament.
He has swept up prizes at international organ competitions and made a début at the famous Philharmonie in Berlin with both a solo recital and an appearance with the Berlin Philharmonic in autumn 2025.
Liebermann compares the organ to an orchestra: “We organists have innumerable instruments under our fingers all at once. We have flutes, we have trumpets, trombones and strings, an entire symphony orchestra.” He is also interested in how every organ is an individual and in designing a customised repertoire for each instrument.
Hearing the 124-stop organ at the Musiikkitalo under Jan Liebermann’s hands (and feet) is something very special!

The Musiikkitalo organ invites listeners to a Christmas banquet featuring a buffet of Johann Sebastian Bach, with a side of his colleagues George Friderick Handel and Tomaso Albinoni.
Organ solos and improvisations bring light to the winter darkness. Soprano arias proclaim the joyous tidings of Christmas, a brilliant trumpet soars above all.
And what would Christmas be without a singalong? The entire audience is welcome to join in as the performers sing familiar Christmas carols.
The organ is played in turn by Pauliina Hyry, organist of Leppävaara parish, and Christian Ahlskog, Lecturer in Organ at the Oulu Conservatory.
Trumpet solos are provided by Pasi Pirinen, Professor of Brass Performance at the Sibelius Academy, and seasonal arias are sung by Johanna Isokoski.

On the Espa Stage, we move between two landscapes: from Spain’s expressive lyricism to Brazil’s pulsing life.
In Tárrega’s world, a small melody can be both a whisper and the sway of a dance — a fleeting spark that keeps resonating in the mind. Villa-Lobos, in turn, brings together the city’s throbbing alleyways and a quiet inner song: the chôro’s immediate rhythmic vitality and the preludes’ drama and wit set spontaneity and form side by side.
Welcome to listen — to let yourself be carried by the music as the colors of Spain and Brazil mingle in the afternoon light!

Million Dollar Tones is a seven-piece band that's been operating for over a decade from Southern Finland, committed to rootsy rhythm & blues and 50s-style rock 'n roll.
In addition to drums, bass, guitar, vocals and piano, the band's sound is enhanced by a two-piece horn section. So, there is no lack of breadth on stage and on the album in this band's case!
Despite the wild jungle rhythms and danceable groove, the music does not compromise on its rootsy elements, which can be found among other things in the New Orleans-inspired piano and saxophone. The rhythm is also balanced by blues ballads. The songs in the lineup are both their own productions and tastefully selected borrowed classics.
The band consists of:
-Albert Hallikainen (guitar)
-Ari Toivonen (tenor saxophone and harmonica)
-Antti Pajula (vocals)
-Marko Lamminmäki (drums and percussion)
-Markus Packalen (double bass, backing vocals)
-Ide Miettinen (trumpet)
-Matti Roth (piano, backing vocals)

Klezmer band Helsinki Klezmer Kapelye was founded in 2005 in connection with the Helsinki Klezmer Festival.
Since then, Helsinki Klezmer Kapelye has made klezmer music and yiddish-language culture familiar to Finnish audiences. The group has regularly performed concerts, festivals and jams, where people sing, dance and even celebrated a theatrical wedding!
Helsinki Klezmer Kapelye is a collective of musicians, many of whom have been performing together for nearly two decades. HKK is the only klezmer band in Finland that performs traditional klezmer music and thus represents the old Jewish culture of Eastern Europe. HKK has given concerts extensively, e.g. Balder's Hall, Juttutupa, Tenho Restobar, G-Livelab, Kaustinen Folk Music Festival, Hauho Manor, Tampere and Hämeenlinna. The band released their first album in May 2023.
Klezmer's roots go back more than two thousand years; some of the modes or scales are derived from the prayers sung in the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Klezmer music is the folk music of Eastern European Jews and dates back to medieval Europe, where klezmer musicians toured communities sharing their rich eastern European culture.
Klezmer is often fast-paced dance music, played at various celebrations and weddings. By the end of the 19th century, klezmer music was already a highly developed and varied musical style, drawing influences from yiddish culture and beyond.

The family-friendly concerts of Children’s Saturday feature the rhythmic duo Beatbox & Cupola and the energetic ZikiZiki Trio.
14:00 Beatbox & Cupola
15:00 ZikiZiki Trio
**
Beatbox & Cupola brings a rhythmic world to Jazz-Espa’s Children’s Saturday, where the traditional roles of instruments are turned upside down! In the duo of Felix Zenger and Lauri Wuolio , rhythms are created with the mouth, and melodies are played on a drum. This preview of Konserttikeskus’s upcoming repertoire introduces two unique and distinct instruments: beatboxing—rhythm produced by the human voice—and the cupola , a melodic metallic percussion instrument. In this inspiring and energetic yet occasionally near-meditative performance, the audience also gets to learn the basics of beatboxing.
Top masters of their instruments, Wuolio and Zenger demonstrate that music can be made in one’s own way and from one’s own perspectives. Zenger has performed worldwide with stars such as Pharrell Williams , and his most popular YouTube video has nearly 40 million views. Lauri Wuolio is one of the most internationally renowned cupola players; his albums, released under the name Kumea Sound , have been streamed over 50 million times.

The concert is organized in collaboration with Concert Centre Finland.

The energetic ZikiZiki family orchestra, appearing at Jazz-Espa as a trio, takes listeners on a humorous journey into the diverse world of rhythmic music in the company of ants, monkeys, and chickens! The concert offers an experiential afternoon where learning and shared joy go hand in hand.

Experimental short film 7.38 min, 16:9 2K
Kristina Laine, Albert Laine
Memories in the Clouds -exhibition in Kuutio (2nd floor) during Oodi's opening hours 15.6 - 2.8. 2026. Welcome!
Memories in the Clouds visualizes Kristina (Žičkutė) Laine’s childhood memories in the Soviet occupied Lithuania. The film brings forth Kristina's worldview as a child, during the vast socio-political changes of the collapsing Soviet Union. Thoughts blend with moods in a painterly experimental film, written in a structured form of a poetic narration.
In the film, a blue sky presents memories as clouds that glimmer, transform and merge into one another like a living watercolor painting. The Lithuanian voice-over is spoken by Kristina herself -now as an adult woman, telling her story in the first person. In the film, past and present meet in the fragile shapes of drifting memory.
The film is based on a combination of timelapse videos of a summer sky, shot in Lithuania and volumetric 3D simulation. Certain sections of the film are animated with 2D techniques and rotoscoping. The film utilizes an AI algorithm (VQGAN + CLIP) as animators to visualize the narrated features to the moving clouds.
The film features subtitles in both Finnish and English.

La Doriclea: Inter-Acts, a new commission from Ensemble Nylandia, follows two colliding timelines: in a 17th-century opera, rival warriors fall in love with each other; in the current day, a group of artists survives in dystopian America; music and dance transcend time and weave these worlds closer together until the warrior Doriclea stands face to face with their 21st-century counterpart.
La Doriclea: Inter-Acts is a new production about finding solidarity and freedom in the connections made possible by art. The music features excerpts from La Doriclea (1645), the once-controversial and partially censored opera by F. Cavalli, alongside other 17th century music by composers such as Byrd, Meder, and Marazzoli.
Duration ca. 2,5 hrs, including intermission.

The stories of the artistically uncompromising Pohjolan Ilmari, who is back after an extended break, feature sad fates, the death of loved ones, the satisfaction of facing the end of humanity and trips to the hospital, with human kindness and humour nevertheless running through them.
Musically, the band's newer material is polished and no longer sticks strictly to the Kallio romantic framework outlined by their Emma-nominated (critics' choice) debut album Enkä mä rakasta ketään, but relies on their aesthetic vision as a binding element between songs.

Indie schlager summer is here again!
Joni Heinäkuu is a mature, genderless poetry person, and they have never grown up even though the years keep rolling by. Heinäkuu’s music is lyrics-driven indie schlager, always centred around emotions. Feelings come through in the melodic hooks, the themes of the lyrics and the humanity of the songs. The music is influenced by the independent greats in Finnish pop and rock, in particular. In their own words, Heinäkuu came to earth to remind the listeners of the eternal power of music:
“I have been writing songs for years, mostly as therapeutic outlets for myself as I wrestle with my emotions and mental health. The songs are a combination of dreams, lived experience and fates that I have experienced, met or sometimes even just thought up for people I see on the streets. Most of them are true, though. I wish that people could find something positive for their lives in my songs. If that happens for even one person, it will have been worth it.”
Producer wizard Pekka Saukkonen has produced countless schlagers, hit songs and queer anthems in addition to Heinäkuu's music. On top of music for other artists, Saukkonen has composed his own music, and a curated selection of these songs from over the years will be heard as performed by the artist himself.
The Espa gig will feature a quartet with these two people who feel differently joining forces and shaking hands for diversity and love. Guitar, vocals, keyboards and a sly use of live electronics are joined by possibly the best Loota drummer in Finland, Joose Vihreä, and award-winning violinist High-D.

Something old, something new and something borrowed from over the years! This is Tolonen!
The latest band of one of our country's most internationally acclaimed guitarists, Jukka Tolonen , was born out of a meeting with Lasse Keso , who is also a great guitarist and is making a documentary film about Tolonen. Keso also has a musical history dating back to the early 70s.
A new name from Jukka's early years was added to the band, and Antti Utriainen , who has played with Jukka before, was added on piano and Vesa Lapinkero on drums.
Hypnotic, jazzy improvisational music, with bass and drums ploughing an easy path that will not quit! The bass's nuances sometimes feel like messages from a guitar, and the band's performances in clubs, which have stretched to almost two hours, have kept people captivated and enthralled.

Two Helsinki-based musicians join forces in a captivating performance that bridges cultures, histories, and sound worlds.
The collaboration between Aizhan Sultan (Kazakhstan) and Saku Liimatainen (Finland) creates a living dialogue between modern Finnish and Kazakh folk music. Ancient traditions meet contemporary soundscapes.
Aizhan Sultan, a singer, songwriter, and researcher, explores themes of disability, identity, and post-colonial memory. Through her voice, Kazakh terme, throat singing, and the haunting resonance of the shanqobyz, she reclaims traditional sounds as tools of resilience and emancipation.
Complementing her is Saku Liimatainen, a live electronic musician, pianist, and composer, whose textured soundscapes weave modern Finnish sonic aesthetics into Aizhan’s nomadic roots. His live electronics reimagine folk traditions through ambient layers, rhythm, and improvisation – creating a space where ancient voices and digital futures coexist.
Together, they craft an intercultural conversation that is as much about history and identity as it is about transformation and artistic freedom. This is a performance where heritage meets innovation.

Gaia does not categorise her music into any one genre. At its best, good music is born and lives without preconceptions.
If Gaia's music had to be characterised, it could be said that it has the mystique of Nordic folk music, spiced up with Spanish and Cuban rhythms.

Finnish psychedelic pop newcomer Hissun Kissun released their debut album Kaleidoskooppi in spring 2026.
Kaleidoskooppi is a masterpiece of distinctive psychedelic pop, with gentle synths, ethereal vocal melodies and sizzling fuzz guitars that take the listener on a journey deep into their own world. Like a kaleidoscope, the album reflects elements from many different influences and genres in ever-changing and symmetrical patterns, creating a diverse and multifaceted experience that combines modern psychedelia, danceable rhythms and enchanting compositions.
Hissun Kissun, founded in Tampere in 2023, was born out of love for pop music, fuzz and analogue synthesisers. It is therefore fitting that the band is based in Tampere, the main hub of Finnish psychedelic music.
The members' other bands include Radio Supernova, Polymoon and Skyjoggers. Hissun Kissun combines different influences, resulting in distinctive psychedelic Tampere-based pop with echoes of dream pop, psychedelic rock, disco and electronic music.

Let's protect the Baltic Sea and collect litter with the power of rap!
MCMUSARIT, a rap group from Ylästö School, was born when the pupils learned about the Baltic Sea at school. Concerned about the deterioration and pollution of the sea, the pupils decided to write a song for the Baltic Sea.
The Are You Ready – Pelastetaan Itämeri! music video has been making the rounds on YouTube and attracting media and social media attention. MCMUSARIT are convinced that it is also worthwhile for children to make their voices heard and take action for a cleaner nature! The students have collected rubbish together and made a new song out of it.
MCMUSARIT hope that their songs and music videos will help people understand that nature and the Baltic Sea need help! MCMUSARIT also recommend that you regularly pick up a piece of litter or two. It's easy to collect rubbish and it will make you feel good! This led to a new song, Roskapäivä, paras päivä.
