Signe Brander’s photographs of Helsinki come alive
To commemorate the 150th anniversary of Signe Brander, a new 2.0 version has been created of the Time Machine virtual experience. The new Time Machine brings Signe Brander’s photographs to life with the help of VR technology to create an immersive and interactive spatial installation that takes visitors on a journey through Helsinki’s past. Time Machine 2.0 will whisk visitors away to early 20th-century Helsinki, where wooden houses are making way for a new city of stone castles. The new city is a mix of national romanticism, Art Nouveau and Nordic classicism – old traditions and new winds.
During Brander’s lifetime, Helsinki was for the first time visible from new vantage points, such as the National Museum’s tower. In addition to the bird’s-eye view, Brander also photographed panoramas at street level, capturing everyday details of urban life. Time Machine 2.0 shows projections based on Brander’s panorama photos of Kallio Church and St Nicholas’ Church (now Helsinki Cathedral).

Helsinki City Museum has produced the In the Quarters of Kruununhaka exhibition on electrical cabinets as part of the OmaStadi project. OmaStadi is Helsinki’s way of implementing participatory budgeting together with the residents. Some of the photographs in the exhibition were featured in the vote held in July 2020. The permanent exhibition consist of 29 photographs. Most of the photos are from the collections of Helsinki City Museum.
The images in the exhibition are nostalgic snapshots of the history of the district and changes in the urban environment. History comes near in the Helsinki Bites exhibition, allowing the visitor to experience the past of the city with all of their senses in many different points. “I remember that, that’s just what we used to have!” many visitors may exclaim in many different spots.

Near the Senate Square, in the oldest city blocks of Helsinki, you can find the blue-grey Sederholm House, built in 1757. It is the oldest house in Helsinki. There, as a part of the Helsinki City Museum, is located Children’s Town, an exhibition especially targeted at the youngest citizens. In Children’s Town, children and their companions can learn more about Helsinki’s history through own experiences and joint activities.
Children’s Town offers an opportunity to jump into a horse-drawn carriage or steer a ship in 18th century surroundings. For the youngest museum visitors, there is a special marine play, reading and rest corner. You can study everyday items from the 1970s in Grandma’s House and watch the favourite TV shows of the time. On weekends, a museum grandma or grandpa is at home in Grandma’s House. In the 1930s elementary school class, you can just picture a schoolmaster with a pointer and a stern face.
There is a lot to study and explore. Showcases feature favourite toys from different periods, from little ponies to mutant turtles and Star Wars figures. The Sederholm shop from the 18th century is a perfect environment for playing shop. Puppets and amusing role costumes and role cards are available in the theatre. You can practise your writing skills, using old tools from sandbox to blackboard, and in another room, you can play with cars or decorate the dolls’ house as you like.
In Children’s Town, everything that is on display may be touched. Children can play under the supervision of their parents or other accompanying adults.

Around one in three Finns live in suburbs, but discussions about suburbs are often based on outdated and negatively charged preconceptions. Helsinki City Museum's exhibition The Unknown Suburb reverses the stigmas associated with suburbs and challenges the perception of suburbs being nests of boredom, misery and poverty. The exhibition aims to look beyond the surface and also explore the love that locals have for their neighbourhoods.
The themes are presented vividly through participatory exercises, an immersive sound environment, tactile façade materials and graffiti by artist Kim Somervuori , among other methods. The Helsinki residents interviewed for the exhibition get to share their everyday and sometimes surprising experiences of their home suburbs.
Slab architecture and refrigerator houses
The exhibition takes visitors on a journey from two-billion-year-old bedrock to a suburban apartment block of the 2000s. The architecture brings together at a glance, through spatial means, the history of Finnish suburbs from the 1940s onwards, with their changing building types. The story culminates at the heart of the suburb, a shopping centre.
At the City Museum, visitors get to explore homely slab architecture, the ‘refrigerator houses’ of Pihlajamäki, the East Helsinki identity and identities outside the city centre, as well as other dimensions of the suburb that are rarely spoken about.
Curators are Research Fellow Laura Berger and Professor Panu Savolainen . Exhibition Planner Alpi Vaalaja and Graphic Designer of the Year 2025 Päivi Helander have created the visuals of the exhibition. The exhibition is produced by Eero Salmio .

Elokuvalavastaja ja tietokirjailija Minna Santakari sekä tutkija Juha Seitajärvi tarkastelevat Kulosaaren studioiden elokuvahistoriaa osana tuoretta Unelmatehdas Kulosaaressa -teosta. Luennolle on vapaa pääsy.
Fennada-Filmi Oy:n elokuvastudiot perustettiin Kulosaaren vanhaan tennishallirakennukseen vuonna 1950. Kulosaaren asukkailla on monenlaisia muistoja studioiden liepeiltä. Naapuruston lapset ja näyttelijä Heidi Krohnin ihailijat saattoivat parveilla Kulosaarentien tuntumassa. Kulosaaren maisemat ja rakennukset taltioituivat lukuisten elokuvien ulkokuviin.
Minna Santakari ja Juha Seitajärvi tarkastelevat lähiluvussa kahta Kulosaaren studioilla kuvattua elokuvaa, Mika Waltarin näytelmään perustuvaa kauhuelokuvaa Noita palaa elämään ( Roland af Hällström , 1952) ja Matti Kassilan Kianto-tulkintaa Punainen viiva (1959), jossa Jussi Jurkka esitti agitaattori Puntarpäätä Jussi-palkinnon arvoisesti.
Minna Santakari on helsinkiläinen elokuvalavastaja, näyttelykuraattori ja tietokirjailija. Juha Seitajärvi työskentelee Kansallisen audiovisuaalisen instituutin Kavin suomalaisen elokuvan tutkijana. He ovat olleet osa tutkijatyöryhmää, joka on juuri julkaissut kirjan Unelmatehdas Kulosaaressa – Fennada-Filmi Oy:n tarina (SKS, 2026).

Welcome to explore Kannelmäki's architecture and urban environment, guided by the curators of The Unknown Suburb exhibition, Laura Berger and Panu Savolainen. Guided tour is in Finnish.
Kannelmäki is one of the first northern suburbs in Helsinki. It is an excellent example of suburban development, showing the different trends in town planning and housing architecture from the 1950s to the 1990s.
The tour includes a visit to the oldest part of Kannelmäki, built between the 1950s and 1960s, and the famous Kannelmäki Church, which represents brutalist architecture. The tour then continues to the newer parts of Kannelmäki, built from the 1970s onwards, with a stop at Cultural Centre Kanneltalo, one of the gems of Helsinki's postmodernist architecture.

Lähiödérivé (Suburban dérivé) is a full-day trek through the suburbs of Helsinki from Kannelmäki to Vuosaari. Panu Savolainen, curator of The Unknown Suburb exhibition, serves as the tour guide.
The concept of dérivé comes from a French avant-garde and Marxist activist group that was active from the late 1950s to the 1960s. For them, dérivé meant an aimless walk that could last for weeks.
Panu Savolainen 's tour is more modest in scale and predictable in nature, with a known end point. The tour will take you on a 25–30-kilometre walk through the suburbs of Helsinki, while Savolainen tells you about the architecture and history of the neighbourhoods. The group will also stop for lunch and dinner at some of the local eateries, and you can take your own lunch or buy snacks along the walk if you wish. There will also be toilet breaks. The dérivé will be heading for Vuosaari, arriving there by 21.00.
The Lähiödérivé tour requires good walking fitness and a mindset that tolerates unpredictability. Participants are advised to wear footwear that is suitable for walking and bring enough water and a snack for the trek.
The event is part of The Unknown Suburb exhibition programme, and the tour is free of charge. No advance registration required. Everyone is welcome to participate!

The festival's artistic directors are celebrating their last joint festival summer and will open the evening with Iiro Rantala's "Gigi". Felice Giardini's playful cello duo, the child prodigy of his Italian era, is followed by "The Waltz King" Johann Strauss Jr.'s Emperor Waltz. The work was originally composed to celebrate the friendship between rulers under the title "Hand in Hand", and today we will hear Arnold Schönberg's ingenious arrangement for an ensemble suitable for Chamber Summer. Spectacular interplay will be seen on stage as the recently announced patron artists Ruusu-Talvikki Heikkilä and Ellen Herler perform alongside Alli Mankkinen, who succeeded in the Turku Cello Competition, Olivia Mikkonen, who performed at the concert of the RSO's Young Soloists, and violinist Fredrika Mikkola, who studies in Paris. The hopeful and bright crown of the evening is Robert Schumann's piano quintet, which will be heard at Chamber Summer after a break of almost ten years.

Kamarikesä 2026: Family concert: The Little Prince — a musical journey
What does it sound like when a plane lands in the desert or travels through planets? What about a king who wants to decide absolutely everything? Come hear and experience the beloved Little Prince in a whole new way at Kamarikesä!
As part of the story, the concert will feature classical music by, among others, Maurice Ravel, Imogen Holst, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Franz Schubert. In the concert, the Little Prince's journey will be musically accompanied four-handed by the Swedish piano duo Nils Hansson Meng and Gustav Schantz, and the story will be narrated by Tanja Niemelä.
Kamarikesä's children's concerts have been an important addition to the city's cultural offerings for families. The goal is to create low-threshold events for children and adults, where exploring classical music is fun, playful, and inspiring.

Last year's successful opening of Kamarikesä, the wine concert, will continue this year! The concert will examine how wine pairings can affect the experience of music, and the audience is invited to explore both new and familiar repertoire from a new perspective.
This time, the wines will be paired with two works: Johannes Brahms' beloved Clarinet Quintet and Leevi Räsänen's new commissioned work. Räsänen's work will be heard twice during the evening, each time paired with a different wine. This offers an opportunity to examine how the same music appears in two different contexts.
Leevi Räsänen's new string quartet features the sparkle and jingle of metal. The evening concludes with a gem from Johannes Brahms' late period, the Clarinet Quintet, Op. 115. The quintet is known for its dark tones, brightly glowing melancholy, lush textures, and seamless instrumentation.
The concert features, among others, one of the artists selected for Kamarikesä's patron program, violist Ellen Herler, cellist Alli Mankkinen, who recently reached the finals of the Turku Cello Competition, and violinist Fredrika Mikkola, who studies at the Paris Conservatory.

The closing concert of the Summer Festival 2026 will feature soulful soprano artistry, as Justyna Khil, a finalist in the 2024 Mirjam Helin Competition and from Poland, arrives at Chamber Summer to perform Richard Strauss's masterpiece Vier letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs).
The work's melancholic beauty and contemplation of letting go are also present in the concert's opening piece, Henryk Górecki's enchanting Good Night. These touching works are not just endpoints, but reminders that letting go always contains the possibility of something new.
The concert Last Messages, organized in collaboration with the Finnish Cultural Foundation, is dedicated to the messages people share in meaningful moments and the ones they leave behind. Before the intermission, Norwegian sound artist Maja S. K. Ratkjen's Breaking the News will shake things up with current topics and an impulsive sound.

For Bo Carpelan (1926–2011), a prominent figure in Finnish literature, music was a beloved hobby. Now, in honour of the 100th anniversary of the author's birth, FiBO and the author's descendants have planned a program that Carpelan would have wanted to hear.
FiBO's artistic director from 2014 to 2017, violinist Antti Tikkanen, is the leader and soloist of the concert.
The concert continues FiBO's period instrument performances of works by Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) with his later suite for violin and string orchestra (op. 117, 1929).
Axel Carpelan (1858–1919) was a friend, supporter and interlocutor of Sibelius. Bo Carpelan's bestselling novel Axel (1986) explores the inner world of Axel, the author’s grandfather’s brother, as well as his social isolation and his relationship to the glorified Sibelius.
FiBO performs symphonies from the year 1764 by Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791).
The program is complemented by Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685–1750) violin concerto in A minor (BWV 1041).

Keisarin Helsinki -arkkitehtuurikävely vie sinut Helsingin pääkaupungiksi rakentumisen ensimmäiseen sataan vuoteen ja sen keskeisiin monumentteihin.
Miten pienestä rannikkokaupungista kasvoi uuden suuriruhtinaskunnan pääkaupunki? Senaatintorin ympärille nousseet rakennukset ammensivat vaikutteita erityisesti Pietarin ja Berliinin uusklassismista, jonka ihanteina olivat symmetria, pylväsjärjestelmät sekä muut antiikin ja renessanssin arkkitehtuurista tutut muodot. 1800-luvun loppupuolella Senaatintorin kylkeen kehittyi Suomen Pankin, Säätytalon ja Kansallisarkiston luoma julkisten rakennusten pienempi tori, joka myös nojautuu renessanssin ihanteisiin, mutta on luonteeltaan kansallisempi.

Taidehistorialliset kävelykierrokset: Siltavuorenpenger
Siltavuorenpenkereen kävelykierroksella pääset tutustumaan kampusalueen yli 100-vuotiaaseen rakennushistoriaan.
Siltavuorenpenkereen arkkitehtuurissa näkyy useita eri rakennustyylejä aina 1900-luvun alkupuolen eklektismistä uuteen arkkitehtuuriin. Alun perin Siltavuorella toimivat fysiologian, fysiikan ja anatomian laitokset, mutta 2000-luvun alussa se muokattiin moderniksi kampukseksi kasvatus- ja käyttäytymistieteille.
Taidehistoriallisia kävelykierroksia järjestää Helsingin yliopiston humanistinen tiedekunta. Kesän ohjelmaan kuuluu 13 erilaista kävelykierrosta, joilla oppaina toimivat Helsingin yliopiston taidehistorian opiskelijat.
Lähtöpaikka on Snellmaninkadun pääty (portaikko), Siltavuorenpenger 5, jonne kannattaa saapua noin 5–10 minuuttia ennen kierroksen alkua. Kierrokset järjestetään säästä riippumatta.

Tervasaaren Tynnyri Sailing Competition & Traditional Sailing Ship Day 2026
On Saturday afternoon traditional sailing ships will compete against each other just off the Helsinki shore. Katajanokka and Kaivopuisto shorefronts are the best locations for watching the race.
After the race, the ships will dock to the Market Square to attend the Traditional Sailing Ship Meet on Sunday. All the ships will be open to the public on Sunday 10.00-16.00.
All of the ships from all over the coastline are open to the public. The public can visit both the sailing ships themselves and their crews.
On the ships and the pier there will be offered e.g. coffee and buns, salmon soup and archipelago music.

Pohjoismaiden suurin muotoilufestivaali Helsinki Design Week levittäytyy syksyllä kaupunginmuseoon. Tervetuloa keskustelemaan lähiöiden merkityksestä!
Tuntematon lähiö -näyttelyn kuraattorit Laura Berger ja Panu Savolainen keskustelevat useassa lähiössä asuneen Vilho Räsäsen sekä pihlajistolaisen aktiivin Anna-Lisa Korhosen kanssa muun muassa sukupolvien ja kulttuurien välisistä eroista, lähiöiden muutoksista ajan saatossa, ja miksi he ovat ylpeitä asuinpaikoistaan. Keskustelijat puhuvat myös siitä, millaisia kohtaamisia lähiöissä syntyy ja voiko yhteisöllisyyttä rakentaa.

The Finnish Baroque Orchestra chamber ensemble performs works from the century of the House of Nobility's construction, including music by Crusell and Sibelius.
The Swedish House of Nobility was founded in 1626, 400 years ago. The founding of the Finnish House of Nobility became a topical issue during Russian rule, and the neo-Gothic House of Nobility was completed in 1862.
The German cello virtuoso Bernhard Romberg (1767–1841) toured Europe as far as the Russian Empire. His symphonies were also performed in Helsinki at concerts of the Academic Music Society.
Crusell (1775–1838) did his most important life's work in Stockholm, but even in a letter he wrote to Johan Ludvig Runeberg later in life, he still saw himself as a Finn. He was still a member of the Royal Court Orchestra in Stockholm when Fredrik Pacius began his career as a violinist in the orchestra.
Sibelius's (1865–1957) En saga is one of the works from his early Symbolist period. Sibelius characterised the mysteriously enchanting work as profoundly Finnish.
