The Architecture & Design Museum’s new main exhibition Escape to Moominvalley opens in October, highlighting the global celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Moomin stories.
The beloved Moomins, created by Finnish artist and author Tove Jansson (1914–2001), have become cultural icons in Finland and beyond.
Jansson originally envisioned Moominvalley as a safe haven in turbulent times. Escape to Moominvalley explores how Jansson perceived architecture and design in her own life and how these elements are reflected in the stories of Moominvalley.

The exhibition invites visitors to explore Alvar, Aino and Elissa Aalto’s architecture and design from the perspective of wellbeing.
The exhibition highlights wellbeing as the Aaltos’ major contribution to Western architectural modernism and examines how their work and philosophy approach it as a balance between people, nature, the built environment, and materials.
It connects the Aaltos’ idea of holistic wellbeing with contemporary thinking and the growing desire to understand wellbeing as extending beyond the individual to concern the whole planet.
The exhibition brings together a diverse dialogue of presentation methods and materials, including drawings and scale models, furniture, glass objects and material experiments, as well as artworks. The exhibition also features rarely displayed items from the museum’s collections.
Among other works, the exhibition includes the multi-channel video installation Other Actors (2025) by London-based artist and researcher Ilona Sagar.
The Aalto Lounge offers a calm space for rest and reflection and invites visitors to explore how being in a space affects their body and mind in the presence of authentic Aalto objects.

Akvarelli
Kesäksi tekniikka vaihtuu akvarelliin, jolloin luodaan värikkäitä kuvia ja yhdistellään niihin tussipiirrosta. Jansson toteutti erityisesti muumikirjojen kansikuvia vesi- ja peiteväreillä ja elävöitti kuviaan lisäksi tussilla.

Step into a blue world where instinct & animals meet!
The Memory of the Herd is a blue world built around animals, inherited memory and ancient instincts. This exhibition is about what lives inside people instinctively: fear, courage, direction, belonging, and the invisible knowledge people receive from those who came before them.
In Jevgenia’s paintings, the bull is a symbol of strength and resilience that acts as a vessel - something ancient, still, and present.
Jevgenia Vassiljeva is a contemporary artist based in Tallinn, Estonia. Her work is centred on large-scale acrylic paintings of animals and symbols.
After studying Graphic Design at the Estonian Academy of Arts, Jevgenia was drawn to symbols that feel ancient and immediate at the same time - bulls, hares, horses, moons, lines, and hidden marks.
