Across the weekend of 11 - 13 September, there will be screenings of John Ford's films, panel discussions and an exhibition to celebrate and educate those on this cinematic giant and his connection to the West of Ireland. Born John Martin Feeney in Portland, Maine, in 1894, Ford became one of the most important and influential directors of Hollywood's golden age. Throughout his long career, the spirit and imagery of his west of Ireland roots remained a powerful influence on his work. Set against the backdrop of Ireland's Atlantic coast, Féile John Ford celebrates not only one of cinema's most influential directors, but also the rich cultural heritage that helped shape his vision.

Take on the Great Fjord Swim – a bucket-list open water challenge in the crystal-clear Atlantic waters of Killary Fjord, surrounded by the soaring mountains of Connemara. This is the grand finale of the trilogy and a true West of Ireland experience. Choose from three distances, with wetsuit and non-wetsuit swimmers welcome in all. The Music: The sessions feature a lineup of master local musicians, including familiar faces like the Hernon family and Don Stiffe. Instruments typically driving the tunes include the fiddle, tin whistle, banjo, uilleann pipes, and the bodhrán (the traditional goatskin frame drum). The Singing: The nights heavily feature traditional Sean-Nós (old style) singing. These are unaccompanied, highly ornamental Gaelic songs passed down through generations, performed by notable local vocalists such as Caitriona Ní Cheannabháin. The Dancing: The stage comes alive with rhythmic Sean-Nós dancing—which is characterized by low-to-the-ground footwork and improvisational steps—as well as brush dancing, step dancing, and set dancing.
