The Turkey of Jean Dieuzaide

Dates: - Thu, Sep 24, 2026, 6:00 PM–10:00 PM The Turkey of Jean Dieuzaide A return to basics The French Institute of Turkey hosts the exhibition La Turquie by Jean Dieuzaide, an exceptional set of photographs taken in 1955 by one of the great names of French humanist photography. Recently presented at the Abbaye de Flaran in Gers, this exhibition is now touring Turkey as a symbolic return to the lands that inspired it more than seventy years ago. In 1955, at the request of Éditions Arthaud, Jean Dieuzaide undertook a long journey through Turkey to illustrate the book Trésor de la Turquie by Michel de Saint-Pierre. For nearly three months, accompanied by his wife Jacqueline, he crossed Istanbul, Ankara, Anatolia, Cappadocia, the shores of the Black Sea and the Aegean coast. From this journey is born a rare, powerful and deeply human photographic corpus. These images reveal a still rural Turkey, crossed by traditions, ancestral gestures, markets, popular festivals, immense landscapes and scenes of daily life captured with a sensitive attention to beings and light. The gaze of Jean Dieuzaide never seeks exoticism: it meets faces, looks, presences. Through the fishermen of Istanbul, the caravaneers of Anatolia, the children of the villages of Cappadocia or the wrestlers of the popular festivals, he composes the living portrait of a country in full mutation. Long remained invisible, these photographs had not been collected in an exhibition since 1957\. Their rediscovery is now a major event. They bear witness not only to the exceptional talent of Jean Dieuzaide—first winner of the Prix Niépce and founder of the Galerie du Château d'Eau in Toulouse—but also to a precious moment in the cultura... Photography Award "under the gaze of Pierre Loti"

Dates: - Thu, Sep 10, 2026, 6:00 PM–10:00 PM On the occasion of the Bicentenary of Photography, the French Institute of Turkey and the France-Turkey Association are launching the Photography Prize "In the footsteps of Pierre Loti", an invitation to cross paths between France and Turkey through contemporary photographic creation. The objective of this photography contest is to promote the Franco-Turkish imagination. Turkey, and Istanbul in particular, is a source of inspiration without limit for visual travel where all the senses are solicited. Inspired by the figure of Pierre Loti, sensitive observer of human and cultural links between the two shores, this prize celebrates photography as a territory of encounter, memory and dialogue. It invites artists to explore the shared narratives, landscapes and imaginations that continue to connect France and Turkey today, in all their richness and complexity. Conceived as a time of discovery, visibility and professional exchanges, this award aims to support emerging and established photographers, promote artistic collaborations and encourage new visual writings. Exhibition, meetings and exchanges with professionals of the image will punctuate this initiative placed under the sign of the look, transmission and circulation of ideas. Through this award, the French Institute of Turkey and the France-Turkey Association wish to open a space for contemporary artistic dialogue where photography becomes a common language, capable of telling the links, the movements, memories and sensitivities that unite the two countries. The winners of the Prize will be exhibited at the French Institute in dialogue with pho... Ara Güler & Marc Riboud, story of a friendship

Dates: - Thu, Sep 3, 2026, 5:00 PM–10:00 PM The exhibition **«History of a friendship of photographers, from the East to the West»** offers a unique encounter between the looks of Ara Güler and Marc Riboud, two great figures of humanist photography in the twentieth century. Through a dialogue of archives, photographs and unpublished documents, this exhibition traces the history of an artistic and human relationship built over travels, correspondence and the same attention paid to the world. Born on two different cultural shores, Ara Güler and Marc Riboud have nevertheless shared a deeply sensitive vision of photography: that of a gaze turned towards beings, cities, everyday gestures and the transformations of contemporary societies. Istanbul, Paris, Asia, the Middle East or even the great upheavals of the twentieth century become, in their respective works, fragments of a common narrative where the image bears witness as much as it brings them together. The exhibition highlights how their trajectories cross between East and West, in a permanent dialogue between memory, modernity and circulation of looks. Vintage prints, personal archives, publications, correspondence and rare documents reveal the bonds of friendship and mutual admiration that united the two photographers across geographical and cultural boundaries. Through this photographic journey, the exhibition also questions the role of archives in building a shared memory. She shows how photography becomes a universal language capable of creating bridges between cultures, generations and territories. More than a tribute to two great names in photography, this exhibition celebrates...
