Across cultural boundaries, composers, visual artists and poets have tried to put the feeling of longing into words: the German word Sehnsucht describes a longing so strong that one can even speak of suffering.
French Impressionism was heavily influenced by the World's Fairs, and oriental and exotic influences can heard in music.
