### Trio Sonatas, the Birth of a Style | Ensemble Temenos
The pieces from the first four collections of Arcangelo Corelli’s Sonate a tre presented in this programme bear witness to the intense musical activity that once resounded through the magnificent architecture of the many Italian palaces, churches and theatres of the second half of the seventeenth century.
The Italians divided sonatas into two principal genres:
“The first comprises the Sonata da Chiesa, that is, one suited to the church, which ordinarily begins with a grave and maestoso movement, proportionate to the dignity and sanctity of the place; this is followed by some lively, animated and impetuous fugue. \[…\]
The second genre comprises the sonata known as da Camera, that is, one suited to the chamber. These are suites of various short pieces suitable for dancing and composed in the same mode or key. This type of sonata ordinarily begins with a Prelude or short sonata serving as an introduction to those that follow; then come the Allemande, Pavane, Courante, and other dances or serious airs, followed by Gigues, Passacaglias, Gavottes, Minuets, Chaconnes and other lively airs; and all these, composed in the same key and performed in succession, together form a Sonata da Camera.”
For decades, Corelli’s first four Opuses would serve as a model for virtually all subsequent trio sonatas and stand as indispensable masterpieces of the genre…
