The lecture, led by Professor Antti Rajala, presents the history, background and key concepts of utopian pedagogy.
Additionally, Doctoral Candidate Aki Saariaho describes how utopian pedagogy has been applied in practice in general upper secondary school education.
Utopia is essentially about imagining things differently. It is about exploring the conditions and significance of wellbeing and a good life. The lecture examines the pedagogy of concrete utopias: how teaching can support young people’s social agency and help them make a difference in their local communities, in society and globally. As an example, the lecture presents a teaching trial carried out at Otaniemi Upper Secondary School, in which pupils used artificial intelligence to envisage alternative futures for Finland. In all of the students’ utopian models, the forest plays a part in some way.
