Monika Fagerholm, author of Nowhere Land / Women in Revolt, and Hannimari Heino, the book’s Finnish translator, discuss the work, which has won both the Finlandia and Runeberg Prizes.

Having just reached adulthood, Alice moves from the countryside to live with her father in the suburbs, joining his artistically inclined reconstituted family, in which her stepmother is a charismatic women’s rights activist. Alice’s period of self-discovery begins: she attends evening classes and open university, spends time in a film archive, and is always where the best parties are held.
She comes across people: Pelle, who becomes her boyfriend; Evelyn, a poet and dancer; and Veronica, who teaches her to write like a small animal. Older people look back on the era as a haven of peace, but Alice’s generation sees things differently: there are reports of unrest in Germany, rumours of battles that are quashed without mercy, and of a rebellious woman who dies in her cell. The walls of Alice’s safe doll’s house crumble under the pressure of global destruction.
Nowhere Land / Women in Revolt is the first part of a trilogy of novels. It depicts the time when a person is so young that the world opens up as a horizon of possibilities and resistance, and of what it takes to grow into an artist. What sort of stories can you tell when nothing has happened yet?
