Singer, songwriter and doctoral researcher Aizhan Sultan invites the audience for a sonic journey between Kazakh nomadic traditions and contemporary soundscapes. Originally from Kazakhstan and now based in Finland, her work draws from both traditional and modern Kazakh music, reflecting personal, political and social experiences shaped across cultures.
Her artistic practice engages in decolonisation in Central Asia and radical inclusion. As a woman living with achondroplasia, she explores power both as oppression and solidarity, positioning art as a force of emancipation. Her performance combines traditional Kazakh singing, throat singing and the sound of the shanqobyz (jaw harp) with live electronics by Saku Liimatainen and drums by Vilho Louhivuori , bridging nomadic heritage with contemporary Finnish sound.
The evening culminates in a performance by Hildá Länsman & Tuomas Norvio, who explore the intersection of the ancient Sámi vocal tradition of luohti (joik) and modern electronic soundscapes.
