In the opening concert of the autumn season, Pori Sinfonietta immerses itself in the world of tango nuevo together with bandoneon artist Henrik Sandås and two outstanding tango dancers.

This concert is a journey into the depths of the soul, where tango nuevo rises as a powerful and intense current, transporting the audience to the Buenos Aires of the 1960s and into the emotional landscape of Astor Piazzolla. The Argentine Piazzolla was one of the world’s most beloved tango composers. He developed his own genre, the innovative tango nuevo, which combines elements of both jazz and classical music.

Piazzolla’s masterpieces reflect the tensions of a pulsating metropolis as well as the conflicts, passionate emotions and deep shadows of the human inner world. The bandoneon weeps, sings, whispers and cries out with intensity, at times with a rough and haunting voice. The celestial violin resounds with heart-rending beauty, like a distant memory bringing tears to the eyes. Passionate dance follows every vibration of the music with sensitivity as movements flow, shimmer and transform alongside the score, becoming a living image of the composer’s emotional landscape.

Henrik Sandås (b. 1981) is a bandoneon artist whose repertoire ranges from Argentine tango and tango nuevo to Baroque music, contemporary classical music, jazz, modern folk music and improvisation.
