Welcome to a lecture on the enigma of authoritarian power. The lecturer is Professor William Mazzarella, University of Chicago. The event will take place on Thursday, August 27, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at and in co-operation with Töölö Library and it is open to the public.

In this lecture, Mazzarella reflects on how we might try to think about authoritarianism and the incomprehensible reality that surrounds us in the world. He applies, among other things, psychoanalytic theory in his anthropological research. He grew up in Finland and visits the country regularly, but the lecture will be in English. The background for the event is that the Finnish Swedish psychotherapy association, under the heading “Thinking with Psychoanalysis”, wants to offer the wider public a chance to consider difficult or interesting questions with psychoanalytic thinking as a tool. This perspective can enrich and deepen understanding of the world outside the therapy session as well. We hope that in this way we can help open new ways to approach and try to understand cultural and societal phenomena.
