Wah-Ming Chang: Hand, Held

Dates:

Thu, 3 Sept 2026, 18:00–20:00

Wah-Ming Chang, a writer and bookmaker based in New York, comes to Helsinki for an intimate evening around her forthcoming artist’s book, Hand, Held, telling about her father’s art practice, his studio, and the memories held within their relationship.

Before the book is released, Wah-Ming will bring handmade booklets and photographic prints of her father’s work and studio, with words from the book typed onto the backs of the prints.

In the event, you can hear Wah-Ming talk about her father and the making of the book, look through the images, and spend some time together over tea.

Wah-Ming’s father is from Sichuan, where the gaiwan has a particular place in tea culture. For the evening, you’ll drink tea from gaiwans, bringing a small part of her father’s background into the room.

Wah-Ming Chang is a writer and bookmaker whose work explores the voids found in family mythologies. She received an MFA in creative writing from Cornell University, and her fiction and poetry have been supported by various arts organizations and publications.

Hand, Held is forthcoming in September 2026, with elements published in Epiphany and The Kenyon Review and appearing in the group exhibition 39 Footnotes at Accent Sisters (New York, 2025). She is the managing editorial director of Catapult Book Group.
