Event Details The Cookout is a summer networking event that aims to bridge artists and their communities through storytelling and traditions rooted in black culture. On a Saturday afternoon, people from all backgrounds are welcome to attend a day-party where they can make a plate, grab a beer, and connect as a larger community. What is a cookout? Most often associated with backyard barbecues and outdoor grilling during warm summer months, a 'cookout' is sometimes used as a colloquialism within black culture to invite someone from an outside culture inside the community. This is based on a shared commitment to the liberation of all people. Background Ich bin Rannie McCants , a playwright and US Fulbright Scholar pursuing a Master’s in Theatre at ZHdK. Through my research into the Swiss abolitionist movement and its relationship to post-Black Lives Matter Switzerland, I uncovered the Völkerkundemuseum der Universität Zürich and its Rumble in the Archive exhibition. I was completely captivated by what I encountered there, and I would love to create a welcoming space for members of my artistic community to experience and engage with the exhibition’s impact. After living in New York City for twelve years, I moved to Zürich last September. Before that, I spent much of my childhood moving between Ohio and Florida. As part of a large Black Southern American family, I often spent my summers in the South, gathering for cookouts, family reunions, graduations, birthdays, and holidays.
