A visit to Viapori Jazz is also a small journey into the birdlife of the Baltic Sea archipelago.
On the islets west of the Suomenlinna ferry route, you may spot common eiders, tufted ducks, mergansers, and five different species of gulls. The area is also home to rarer birds, including the common shelduck, little gull, red-necked phalarope, and Steller's eider.
Together with the John Nurminen Foundation, Viapori Jazz invites you to pause for a moment to admire the beauty of the Baltic Sea's birdlife while reflecting on the fragile and vulnerable environment these birds call home.
Throughout the festival, you are warmly invited to visit Birds of the Archipelago, a stunning photography exhibition by archipelago photographer Raimo Sundelin.
The exhibition is located in the Korppukuivaamo Passage leading to Tenalji von Fersen.

Saxophonist Timo Lassy takes the stage alone in the beautiful setting of the Suomenlinna Church.
Highly sought after both in Finland and internationally, this jazz powerhouse is known not only for his acclaimed Timo Lassy Band, but also for numerous collaborations with many of Finland's foremost jazz artists, where musical ideas are exchanged with the spontaneity and freedom that only great jazz musicians can achieve.
For his solo concert at Viapori Jazz, however, Lassy turns away from musical dialogue with fellow performers and directs his gaze inward.
Expect an intimate musical journey shaped by questions the artist poses to himself—and answers discovered through the voice of his saxophone. (No audience participation required.)

Known as the "Mother of Jazz," Mary Lou Williams was one of the most influential composers, pianists and arrangers in jazz history.
Among her most ambitious works is Zodiac Suite, composed for jazz ensemble and classical orchestra. Written at a time when women composers received little recognition, the suite's twelve movements are dedicated to some of the era's greatest musicians, including Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday.
In this project by Aki Rissanen and Selma Savolainen, Zodiac Suite is given a new life. Newly composed vocal melodies and lyrics layered onto the original score transform the work from the abstract into something more personal and strikingly contemporary—giving it a voice that speaks to the present day as well.
Beneath the vaulted ceilings of Tenalji von Fersen, audiences will experience both a tribute to the pioneering composer who paved the way for generations of women musicians and a compelling new work in its own right—all in one unforgettable performance.

Johanna Försti – Dolly Parton
Pardon, Ms. Parton. America isn't quite what it used to be – and neither is Dolly Parton...or at least not her songs once Johanna Försti has had her way with them.
At the bacchanalian finale of Viapori Jazz, the rulebook on harmony is officially thrown out the window as beloved songs by the legendary singer-songwriter are reimagined by Finland's reigning queen of vocalists.
When Försti and her stellar band hit full throttle, there's only one thing left to do: let your guard down and surrender to pure musical euphoria.
Johanna Försti – vocals

Mikko Antila – vibraphone
Juho Kivivuori – bass

Opastuksella tutustutaan Merenkulkijan kartastot – Karttojen matkassa Itämerellä -näyttelyyn. Näyttely avaa merikartoituksen perusteita ja esittelee 1600–1800‑lukujen merikartastoa.
Itämeren aalloilla on kuljettu jo viikinkiajoista, mutta alueen ensimmäiset varsinaiset merikartat syntyivät vasta 1500‑luvun lopulla. Seuraavien vuosisatojen aikana, erityisesti 1600–1700‑luvuilla, ruotsalaiset ja venäläiset loivat järjestelmällisen merikartoituksen perustan. Merikartat olivat aikansa huipputeknologiaa – strategisesti ja taloudellisesti arvokkaita dokumentteja, joita suojeltiin tarkoin.
John Nurmisen Säätiön merellinen kokoelma kattaa lähes tuhat vanhaa karttaa Itämeren ja pohjoisten merialueiden vesiltä aina 1400‑luvulta lähtien. Kokoelman ytimen muodostaa kahdeksan harvinaista kartastoa, joista osan kuvia nähdään näyttelyssä Merenkulkijan kartastot.
Näyttely avaa merikartoituksen perusteita ja Itämeren kartoituksen vaiheita ja syventyy neljään 1600–1800‑lukujen merikartastoon. Kartat kuljettavat kävijänsä koko Itämeren alueelle, ja mukana on ruotsalaisia, hollantilaisia, venäläisiä ja englantilaisia näkökulmia.

Temporary exhibitions and events by artists working on Harakka Island throughout the summer.
The artists at Harakka Artists’ House organize art exhibitions and various events on Harakka Island from May through October. During the summer, Galleria Lennätin operates out of the island’s old telegraph building, and exhibitions are also held in locations such as the old military casemates.
Over 30 professionals from various art fields work at Harakka Artists’ House. Inside the building, art forms and generations of artists come together in a unique way. The weekly rotating exhibitions offer a glimpse into the heart of Harakka’s artist community: the work of individual creators intertwines with a larger whole, where the island’s environment and history are woven together.

Suomenlinnassa toteutettavalla kävelykierroksella kuullaan linnoituksen mielenkiintoisesta historiasta ja nykypäivästä.
Vuonna 1748 käynnistyivät pikkuruisen Helsingin kaupungin edustalla työt, joista alkoi Viaporin historia. Kuudelle saarelle rakennettu bastionilinnoitus palveli Ruotsin Saaristolaivaston tukikohtana, jonka tarpeisiin rakennettiin myös suuri kuivatelakka. Ruotsin ajan lopulla alkuvuosien karusta rakennustyömaasta oli jo kuoriutunut yksi tuolloisen Suomen alueen suurimpia ja vilkkaimpia asutuskeskittymiä.
Linnoituksen venäläinen kausi käynnistyi Suomen sodan aikana, aikalaisia kummastuttaneen ja kauan keskustelua ja kysymyksiä herättäneen linnoituksen antautumisen myötä vuonna 1808. Venäläinen kausi kesti 110 vuotta, ja jätti perinnöksi mm. lukuisia kasarmirakennuksia sekä linnoitussaarten lounaispuolelle rakennetut vallit pattereineen - kauppiaskorttelin marketenttien kuuluisia sukuja ja Krimin sodan kokemuksia ja tarinoita unohtamatta.
Linnoituksen suomalainen kausi puolestaan käynnistyi keväällä 1918 Suomen sisällissodan tummassa varjossa. Sittemmin linnoitussaarista muodostui elävä varuskuntayhteisö ja ainutlaatuinen kulttuuriperintökohde.

Atlases of The Mariner -Historical sea charts of the Baltic Sea exhibition introduces in its first room the basics of marine charting and the history of mapping the Baltic sea.
For centuries, sailors have travelled the waters of the Baltic Sea, yet the region’s first true sea charts were not created until the late 16th century. Over the following centuries—especially in the 17th and 18th centuries—Swedish and Russian cartographers laid the foundations for systematic marine charting. Sea charts were cutting edge technology of their time: strategically and economically valuable documents that were carefully protected.
The maritime collection of the John Nurminen Foundation comprises nearly one thousand old maps of the Baltic Sea and northern waters, dating back as far as the 15th century. At the heart of the collection are eight rare atlases, images of which are featured in the exhibition Atlases of the Mariner.
The exhibition introduces in its first room the basics of marine charting and the history of mapping the Baltic Sea. The second room presents four sea atlases from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The charts take visitors across the entire Baltic region, offering Swedish, Dutch, Russian, and English perspectives.
