Malaria is described as an urgent global problem solved only through medicine and mosquito control. Its history tells a different story.
In Finland, malaria declined as living conditions slowly changed. In Cyprus, eradication emerged through a locally designed public health programme.
Today malaria continues to intersect with questions of labour, water, land, housing and political inequality.
WAM! World After Malaria brings together international researchers, artists, film-makers, musicians, and healthcare workers to Helsinki for 2 days to share different stories of this disease.
About how societies change, how public health is built, and how art, labour and research have and can make a more equitably connected world.
Highlights include a new film about the scientist who discovered the end of malaria in Finland, an Ottoman melodrama combining storytelling with live musical performance, an immersive theatrical installation about fever and Shakespeare, an international book launch by Professor Ann Kelly of Oxford University, and African Dialogues with Dr Marceline Finda from Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania.
