Tilaisuuksissa kuulemme toistemme ajatuksia ja kokemuksia tekoälystä ja yritämme yhdessä oppia ymmärtämään, mitä meidän pitäisi ottaa huomioon, jotta tämä teknologia palvelisi meitä mahdollisimman hyvin.
Millainen rooli tekoälyllä on arjessasi? Herättääkö tekoäly sinussa toivoa tai huolta? Luotatko tekoälyyn? Mistä meidän tulisi keskustella enemmän?
Keskustelut käydään Rakentavan keskustelun pelisäännöillä ja niitä vetävät väitöskirjatutkija Rasmus Sihvonen ja strateginen konsultti Kirsi Pietilä. Keskusteluita ei julkaista sellaisenaan missään ja niistä tehtävien muistiinpanojen sisältö anonymisoidaan.
Tilaisuuksiin osallistuminen ei edellytä minkäänlaista pohjatietoa tekoälystä eikä erityistä osaamista. Olennaista on halu aidosti kuulla muiden näkökulmia ja jakaa omia ajatuksia keskustelussa muiden osallistujien kanssa. Keskusteluihin ei ole ennakkoilmoittautumista, mutta tilaan mahtuu vain rajallinen määrä osallistujia. Lämpimästi tervetuloa mukaan!

Helsinki City Library is organising a love-themed poetry competition in autumn 2026 and invites everyone to write about love in its many forms.
Take part in the library’s love poetry competition
from 14 September to 18 October. The competition is open to adults and young people aged 15 and over. You can write the poem in Finnish, Swedish or
English.
The competition’s preliminary panel consists of Helsinki City Library staff with knowledge of poetry. The final winners will be chosen by actress Alma Pöysti and performance poet, translator and cultural activist Kasper Salonen . The authors of the best poems in each category will be rewarded with gift vouchers to the Rosebud bookstore.

Join the Asian Book Club Helsinki for an Asian LitCha on the Saarikoski Rug in Oodi!
During this event we offer you an opportunity to meet other readers and lovers of Asian Literature and to share book tips with each other in an open, inviting setting.
Each participant brings 1-3 contemporary, literary* books (or simply titles, if one doesn't own the book) by authors from an Asian background – this includes biracial and diaspora authors. Books by authors from all 5 Asian regions (Southeast, East, South, West, Central) are welcomed! During the event we will split up into smaller groups and exchange experiences with the book(s) one has brought. Everyone is invited to make it their own group conversation. To help guide and perhaps deepen the conversations there will also be prompts and guidance available.
* Literary books = fictional literature (novels, short story collections/bundles, novellas), autobiographical fiction and memoirs. The following genres are therefore not included: fantasy, sci-fi, thriller, crime, mystery, horror, romance, biographies.

Syksyn suurimmassa ilmastovaikuttamisen tapahtumassa on luvassa inspiroivia puheenvuoroja siitä, miten voit hillitä ilmastonmuutosta omassa arjessasi.
Illan aikana kuulemme, mistä suomalaisen hiilijalanjälki yleensä muodostuu ja miten sitä voi pienentää. Kuulemme myös kokemuspuheenvuoroja kulutuksen vähentämisestä ja järjestötyöstä ilmastonmuutoksen parissa. Paikalla on lisäksi useita ilmastotyötä tekeviä järjestöjä kertomassa toiminnastaan ja siitä, miten heidän toimintaansa voi halutessaan lähteä mukaan vapaaehtoiseksi.

Jokaiselle on tärkeää, että hän kelpaisi, riittäisi ja tulisi hyväksytyksi. Kelpaaminen on yksi ihmisen perustarpeista.
Ihmisyyden peruskysymykset ovat kaiken aikaa pysyneet samoina. Tänäkin päivänä opiskelu, työ ja ihmissuhteet haastavat kysymään ”kelpaanko minä” ja ”hyväksytäänkö minut”. Jossakin vaiheessa jokainen on törmännyt kysymykseen, kelpaanko minä?
Emeritusprofessori Paavo Kettusen uutuuskirja Kelpaanko minä? 1: Haasteina riittämättömyys, itsetunto ja uskonnollinen kelpaaminen pureutuu kelpaamattomuuden juuriin, minäkuvaa ja itsetuntoa nakertavaan riittämättömyyden kokemukseen sekä terveeseen ja epäterveeseen syyllisyyteen ja häpeään. Toisaalta kirjassa käsitellään myös terveellistä ja suojaavaa häveliäisyyttä. Kirjan aihepiiri liittyy keskeisesti ihmisarvoon ja itsetuntoon ja vie syvälle eksistentiaalisiin kysymyksiin.
Kettunen on tullut tunnetuksi häpeäprofessorina. Hän on tutkinut häpeää, syyllisyyttä, rippiä ja sielunhoitoa yli 30 vuoden aikana. Tutkimusten pohjana ovat satojen suomalaisten kirjoittamat omakohtaiset kokemukset näistä aihepiireistä.
Teologina Kettunen käsittelee myös teologista kysymystä ”kelpaanko Jumalalle”, joka usein sisältää myös kysymyksen siitä, ”kelpaanko uskonnolliselle yhteisölle”. Tällöin joudutaan pohtimaan, millaista on turvallinen tai alistava hengellisyys.
Kirjassa käsitellään riittämättömyyden ja kelpaamattomuuden tuntoja myös yliopistomaailmassa.

Lukupiiri on osa Koneen Säätiön rahoittamaa tutkimushanketta Monikriisin varjossa. Voit osallistua tutkimukseen antamalla suostumuksesi lukupiirikeskustelujen tallentamiseen ja kirjoitusharjoitusten käyttöön (anonyymisti).

The Clothing Library is a collective of five designers and artists, as well as a pilot project at the Oodi Central Library. The aim is to create a collection of clothing made from recycled materials, which anyone can borrow with a library card.
The Clothing Library draws support from the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Arts and Culture Agency, and the Otto A. Malm Foundation. Alongside Oodi, its partners are Globe Hope and Emmaus Helsinki.

High-flying circus artists take over the Central Station Tower
The walldance show by aerial acrobatics begins at 18.00. Other circus artist perform at the Central Station as early as 17.00.
On a Wednesday evening in September, something unprecedented will take place in the heart of Helsinki as aerial acrobats take to the stage on the clock tower of Helsinki Central Station.
The performers include aerial acrobats from Sorin Circus and wall dancer Heidi Miikki.
The station’s iconic clock tower will come to life as the aerial acrobats descend to hang and dance in the air from the balconies of the tower, which stands almost 50 metres high.
The aerial acrobatics show, taking place high up in the clock tower, begins at 18.00. The Railway Square will serve as the viewing area. A taste of other circus arts will be on offer at the Central Station from 17.00 onwards. Make sure you arrive at Railway Square in good time. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
This free event is organised by Circus & Dance Finland, in collaboration with Helsinki Central Station and the Kellotorni event centre.

The outdoor screenings of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra’s concerts on the Music Centre’s media wall have found a special place in the hearts of audiences. Even though rain showers poured down from the sky during the outdoor screening in May, attendees praised the atmosphere of the event and expressed the wish that concerts could be broadcast outdoors more often.
To celebrate the opening of the concert season, the orchestra invites the whole city on Wednesday, 2 September 2026 at 7 pm to watch and listen to a live broadcast from the Concert Hall outside the Music Centre. The concert can be enjoyed from benches provided on site or from your own picnic blanket on the lawns near Kansalaistori Square.
The outdoor screening is free of charge, and the Music Centre café will be open throughout the evening. Visitors may also enjoy their own refreshments on the green terrace facing Mannerheimintie.
The evening’s themes can be explored in greater depth at the Pre-Concert Talk, beginning at 6:15 pm in the Terrace Foyer. Hosted by the orchestra’s General Manager, Jari Eskola , the event offers an introduction to the concert programme and its themes with composer Cecilia Damström and author Jessikka Aro .
An outdoor event of many emotions and ideas
The evening begins with a work by Cecilia Damström inspired by Russian troll factories and disinformation. She composed it by applying Morse code to the musical notation from beginning to end.

FRSO's first Sunday concert of the year takes to the mountains of Poland, the native country of violinist Justyna Grudzień.
The folk music of the Goral people of that region has inspired numerous Polish composers.
This programme features two String Quartets by Karol Szymanowski evoking the landscape of the mountains and traditional Goral dances.
Mikołaj Górecki and Wojciech Kilar were also inspired by the mountains; the latter’s Orawa focuses on the joy of harvest festivals in the Carpathian Mountains.

Malaria is described as an urgent global problem solved only through medicine and mosquito control. Its history tells a different story.
In Finland, malaria declined as living conditions slowly changed. In Cyprus, eradication emerged through a locally designed public health programme.
Today malaria continues to intersect with questions of labour, water, land, housing and political inequality.
WAM! World After Malaria brings together international researchers, artists, film-makers, musicians, and healthcare workers to Helsinki for 2 days to share different stories of this disease.
About how societies change, how public health is built, and how art, labour and research have and can make a more equitably connected world.
Highlights include a new film about the scientist who discovered the end of malaria in Finland, an Ottoman melodrama combining storytelling with live musical performance, an immersive theatrical installation about fever and Shakespeare, an international book launch by Professor Ann Kelly of Oxford University, and African Dialogues with Dr Marceline Finda from Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania.

Mitä jos elämäsi säröt ja haavat eivät olekaan merkki pelkästä rikkinäisyydestä, vaan reittejä, joiden kautta valon ja arvon tulisi päästä loistamaan?
Yhteiskunnassamme, joka vaatii suorituksia arvon perustana ja tiettyyn muottiin sopimista, on herkän, heikon ja erilaisen ihmisen liian helppo tuntea itsensä ulkopuoliseksi, vääränlaiseksi tai täysin riittämättömäksi. Tämä rauhan ja lempeyden iltapäivä Oodissa on omistettu pysähtymiselle, lempeydelle ja sen oivaltamiselle, että jokaisessa meissä piilee poikkeuksellinen arvo ja viisaus.
Tapahtumalla on myös syvästi henkilökohtainen merkitys: tapahtumaa edeltävänä päivänä 12.9. tulee kuluneeksi täyteen 6 vuotta kirjailijan isoveljen poismenosta. Tämä tilaisuus ja Viisauden Peili -teos on omistettu hänen muistolleen sekä muille hänen kaltaisilleen, mielen varjojen kanssa kamppaileville.
Syvennymme lämpimässä ja koskettavassa keskustelussa Suvi-Marja Mwizerwan esikoisteoksen Viisauden Peili teemoihin. Käsittelemme rehellisesti, mutta toivoa tarjoillen:
- Koulukiusaamisen ja ulkopuolisuuden jälkiä – miten syvät haavat käännetään myötätunnoksi ja tunneälyksi.
- Mielen varjoja ja ahdistusta – miten synkät hetket ja masentuneisuus voivat kääntyä omaksi ainutlaatuiseksi kasvuksi.
- Erityisherkkyyttä ja neurokirjoa – miten opimme näkemään oman ja lapsemme poikkeavan linssin lahjana.
Tämä tilaisuus on avoin ja syleilevä turvapaikka kouluikäisille, nuorille, vanhemmille, kasvattajille ja jokaiselle, joka kantaa sisällään hiljaista kipinää ja kaipaa vahvistusta omalle matkalleen.

Tervetuloa kuuntelemaan Sirpa Pääkkösen musiikkipitoista satuesitystä Milla-Malle ja taikamatto keskustakirjasto Oodin lasten tapahtumatilaan 19.9.2026 klo 14.00 .
Milla-Malle lähtee seikkailemaan kahden lelunallensa kanssa. Seikkailu vie Afrikkaan saakka. Siellä kohdataan eläimiä ja pieni poika nimeltä Bobo.
Satu ruokkii mielikuvitusta. Milla-Malle ja nallet kokevat matkan aikana erilaisia tunteita: rohkeutta, läheisyyttä, jännitystä ja koti-ikävää. Lopulta matto tuo heidät turvallisesti takaisin kotiin. Sadussa on ystävyyttä yli rajojen.
Satuesityksen kesto on 25 minuuttia, ikäsuositus yli 3-vuotiaille.

Vaatekirjasto on viiden suunnittelijan ja taiteilijan kollektiivi sekä pilottihanke Keskustakirjasto Oodissa. Tarkoituksena on luoda kierrätysmateriaaleista vaateaineisto, jonka vaatteet ovat kenelle tahansa lainattavissa kirjastokortilla.

Monessa suomalaisessa kunnassa terveyskeskus on siirretty etäämmälle, lähikoulu lakkautettu ja viranomaispalvelut viety verkkoon tai kauempana sijaitseviin keskuksiin. Muutoksia perustellaan taloudellisella ja hallinnollisella välttämättömyydellä, mutta monille kansalaisille ne merkitsevät kokemusta siitä, että valtio vetäytyy kauemmas. Kun julkisia palveluja keskitetään, kyse ei ole vain palveluiden sijainnista. Samalla muuttuvat ihmisten kokemukset turvallisuudesta, osallisuudesta, oikeudenmukaisuudesta ja yhteiskuntaan kuulumisesta. Mitä tapahtuu hyvinvointivaltion oikeutukselle tilanteessa, jossa sen läsnäolo arjessa vähenee?
Tilaisuudessa keskustellaan julkisten palveluiden keskittämisestä, alueellisesta eriarvoisuudesta, hyvinvointivaltion muutoksesta ja kansalaisten suhteesta valtioon säästöpaineiden aikakaudella. Tilaisuuden järjestää “Etäisyyden politiikka 1900- ja 2000-lukujen Suomessa”-tutkimushanke (ETPO).
Kuulemme tilaisuuden aluksi alustukset ETPO-hankkeen tutkijoilta Mattias Lehtiseltä ja Heikki Sirviöltä, hyvinvointivaltion historiaa tutkivalta Minna Harjulalta ja Sanna Tuurnakselta, joka tutkii julkisten palvelujärjestelmien muutoksia. Tämän jälkeen tilaisuus jatkuu paneeli- ja yleisökeskustelulla.

Jaakko Metsäpelto: The Coal Organ
The Coal Organ on kuopiolaisen äänitaiteilija Jaakko Metsäpellon ääniveistos, joka rakentuu kivihiilen polton ympärille.
Viime vuonna suljetun Helsingin Salmisaaren hiilivoimalan viimeisinä toimintapäivinä taltioiduista äänistä koostettu teos on kolmikanavainen äänimaisema, jossa eri taajuudet ja intensiiviset tekstuurit korostuvat vuorotellen. Teoksen visuaalinen puoli muodostuu pyyhkäisyelektronimikroskoopilla otetuista hiilen polton pienhiukkasia tarkastelevista kuvista, joista Metsäpelto on editoinut kolmen abstraktin kuvateoksen sarjan.

Jaakko Metsäpelto: The Coal Organ
The Coal Organ is a sound sculpture by Finnish sound artist Jaakko Metsäpelto, which focuses on coal burning.
Metsäpelto was granted access to now defunct Salmisaari power station in Helsinki during its
final operating days to make sound recordings, out of which he created a three channel sound work that resulted in a texture rich constantly evolving soundscape. Its visual counterpart consists of scanning electron microscopy images of particles emitted from a coal fired power plant, which Metsäpelto edited into a series of three abstract pieces.
The Coal Organ is exhibited in front of Oodi at Helle Kannilan aukio on September 1–2 from 12 pm to 6 pm.

Tiedäthän tunteen, kun lukiessasi hyvää kirjaa, sen juoni, hahmot ja tarinat alkavat yhtäkkiä tuntua omakohtaisilta? Saman havaitsevat myös improkirjakerholaiset. He puhuvat lukukokemuksestaan, tulkitsevat teosta, jakavat ajatuksiaan ja ajautuvat sivupoluille. Vähitellen keskustelun lomassa kirjan hahmot, tilanteet ja maailmat alkavat herätä eloon näyttämöllä. Improkirjakerhossa mikä vain on mahdollista!
Improkirjakerho on täysin improvisoitu uusi esitys, joka ammentaa kokemuksesta, joka on meille kaikille tuttu: kirjojen lukemisesta, niiden tulkitsemisesta ja oman elämän peilaamisesta fiktion kautta. Improvisaatio on käsikirjoittamatonta teatteria, joka syntyy hetkessä, ja pohjaa vahvaan vuorovaikutukseen, läsnäoloon ja kuunteluun. Saat nauttia esityksestä turvallisesti omalta paikaltasi, yleisöä ei kutsuta lavalle.
Esityksen kesto: 30 minuuttia.

London-born pianist Keval Shah performs a set of solo piano music written for him by the Los Angeles-based composer Reena Esmail . Together, they have crafted a body of solo piano music whose soundworld reflects the complexity and multiplicity of their identities and influences, and which defies easy categorisation.
Debuted at Helsinki’s Flow Festival in 2025, Keval now brings this show to Central Library Oodi, a building which encapsulates the core values which have shaped Keval’s life in Finland, and from which this new artistic material is born: space, silence, autonomy.

Would you like to practice Arabic?
Welcome to Arabic Language Café, where you can practice speaking Arabic, chat, drink tea, and meet new people. The language café is suitable for everyone who has already some background in Arabic.
The language café takes place in Group Room 4 on the second floor of the library on Thursdays at 4.30–6.00 p.m. It runs from September 3rd to December 3rd. The event is free and open to everyone.

Helsinki Circus Festival, taking place for the first time in September 2026, is a full-on celebration of Finnish circus! Over four festival days, audiences will experience 13 circus performances spanning a wide range of styles — from street circus and performance art to tent circus, comedy, contemporary circus, new magic, and shows for children. The festival presents Finnish contemporary circus as a rich and diverse art form.
At the heart of this artist-driven festival is the Finnish circus community. The event is organised by Pro Sirkus ry, an association founded by Finnish contemporary circus groups and artists, together with Cirko – Centre for New Circus and cultural centres Stoa and Caisa. In addition to these performance venues circus will also take place in a big top tent in the middle of Suvilahti, and also in the surrounding street areas.

Syyllinen, kunnes toisin todistetaan.
Tämän piti olla palkitun muusikon elämäkerta, väritettynä päähenkilönsä kokemuksilla suomalaisesta yhteiskunnasta. Jesse Markinin tarina alkoi Liberiasta, kulki Viljakkalan kautta koko kansan suosikiksi, mutta sai painajaismaisen käänteen.
Markinin lapsi sairastui vakavasti, lääkärit epäilivät pahoinpitelyä ja lastensuojelu sijoitti vauvan kiireellisesti. Alkoi taistelu oman syyttömyyden ja lapsen kotiinpaluun puolesta, suomalaista oikeusjärjestelmää vastaan.
Ravisuttava teos yhdistää Markinin päiväkirjamerkinnät, läheisten ja kollegoiden äänet sekä vakuuttavan lääketieteellisen aineiston. Ketä kuunnellaan? Miten säilyttää toivo, kun kaikki on viety?
Jesse Markin ja Elina Westinen saapuvat keskustakirjasto Oodiin haastateltaviksi teoksestaan Käärmeitä ja perhosia (2026). Haastattelijana toimii kirjastonhoitaja Heini Strand.

Syvälle-kollektiivi kutsuu improvisaatiosta, kansanmusiikista ja taiteellisesta tutkimuksesta kiinnostuneita soivaan tapahtumaan, jossa kuullaan musiikkia ja keskustellaan pitkäkestoisen, vähäsävelisen improvisaation kokemuksesta tekijänä ja kuulijana.
Kohtaamisia Syvällä on Syvälle-hankkeen yleisölle avoin keskustelusarja, jossa kollektiivi etsii näkökulmia improvisaatioon yhteistyössä erilaisten improvisointiin syventyneiden taiteilijoiden kanssa. Hanke järjestää vuoden 2026 aikana kuusi tapahtumaa, joista osassa on mukana vierailijoita.
Vieraana Kotve-kollektiivi
Kotve on kolmen kansanmuusikon perustama improvisaatiokollektiivi. Uteliaisuus erilaisiin soundeihin ja äänimaailmoihin vie kollektiivin monenlaisille retkille mielen maisemiin, joissa läsnäolo kuuluu ja tuntuu. Kotve venyttää jousisoittimien rajoja laajennetuilla soittotekniikoilla luoden mielenkiintoisia äänenvärejä täysin akustisesti. Muusikoilla on yhteinen maaperä kansanmusiikissa, josta välillä poiketaan kauemmas, mutta toisinaan palataan tutulta tuntuvaan poljentoon. Kollektiivin musiikki elää hetkessä ja muotoutuu vuorovaikutuksessa ympäristön kanssa.

Maijansali 1. krs klo 11.30 - 13.45 : Kaksi erillistä demonstraatiota, joissa voi seurata, kun kokeneet ikebana-opettajat rakentavat asetelmia. Tilaan mahtuu 60 henkilöä ja demonstraatioita voi seurata myös Maijansalin ulkopuolelta.

Eino Leinon eksät – enemmän ja vähemmän muusina on näyttelijä Pinja Hahtolan käsikirjoittama hulvattoman hauska ja oivaltava monologinäytelmä Leinon sydämenvalituista.
Seppo Honkosen ohjaama esitys marssittaa nimensä mukaisesti lavalle koko joukon Eino Leinon sydämenvalittuja.
Esitys on hurmannut katsojia ja kriitikoita ympäri Suomea sekä palkittu parhaana esityksenä Valtakunnallisessa monologikilpailussa Oulussa 2019.

The National Youth Theatre is a group of young theatre makers who challenge the understanding of who is allowed to make theatre and who it is for.
The group includes performers from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Finland, Kurdistan, Somalia and Syria, who work together with experienced artists. The script is based on material produced by the young people.
"if you ask us is not based on a play or ready-made script. All the material has been created in the rehearsal room through different practices of improvisation and task-based scores. Then, the material has been edited and developed together with the actors. We use processes of theatre making so that we can understand and influence how we are represented.
This group began working in January 2026. Together we have been learning to listen – to each other and to the world, listening to words and listening to movement.
Our stage finds its frame from questions of language, truth, tradition and modernity. Seeking understanding is a constant process of back-and-forth movement."

Tositapahtumiin perustuva riipaisevan kaunis esitys kertoo teosta, joka jäi suomalaiseen rikoshistoriaan – ja musiikista, joka voi pelastaa kokonaisen elämän.
Ala-asteikäisellä Askolla on kaksi sankaria: mummo – ja Elvis. Molemmat suojelevat Askoa omalla tavallaan kotiolosuhteilta, jossa Askon isä käyttäytyy väkivaltaisesti niin poikaa kuin äitiäkin kohtaan.
Askon perheen todellisuus on kaikilla haapajärveläisillä tiedossa. Kukaan ei kuitenkaan tee asialle mitään – ennen kuin on liian myöhäistä.
Haapajärven Elvis perustuu Katariina Vuoren kirjaan Erään tapon tarina (Like, 2018), joka kertoo yhdestä Suomen rikoshistorian tunnetuimmasta ja hätkähdyttävimmästä rikoksesta.
Näytelmän on kirjan pohjalta kirjoittanut Lauri Maijala, joka on myös ohjannut esityksen.

Youssef Asad Alkhatib oli kuusivuotias, kun kuuli opettajaltaan biologisen äitinsä kuolleen. Järkyttynyt pikkupoika luuli äitipuoltaan murhaajaksi ja halusi kostaa. Aseeksi valikoitui hajuvesi, jonka tuoksu on seurannut häntä siitä lähtien.
Asad Alkhatib on tehnyt monologiesityksen elämänsä tapahtumista, jotka ovat kuljettaneet ja kasvattaneet häntä.
Syyrian Palmyrassa vuonna 2000 syntynyt Asad Alkhatib on kulkenut kotimaastaan ensin yksin Kreikkaan, sitten alaikäisenä perheettömänä kiintiöpakolaisena Suomeen.
Suomessa 16-vuotiaan voimakas tahto tulla näyttelijäksi viitoitti tietä ensimmäisestä päivästä lähtien.
Hajuvesi on Asad Alkhatibin ensimmäinen oma sooloesitys, joka sai ensi-iltansa vuonna 2022.

Kepeä elämäni on näyttelijä Miiko Toiviaisen omakohtainen tarina siitä, miten transtausta voi kääntyä onnellisuuden lähteeksi.
Se on runollista ja laulullista, leikkisää näyttelijäntyön ilotulitusta, kertomus kodin löytämisestä omasta itsestään.
Ensi-iltansa (2019) jälkeen ’Kepeällä’ on ollut esityksiä kymmenillä paikkakunnilla Tukholmaa myöten.
Helmikuussa 2020 Kepeä elämäni nimettiin Valtakunnallisen Monologikilpailun voittajaksi ja samana keväänä Miiko Toiviainen sai monologista Vuoden teatterinäyttelijä -palkinnon.

The walking tour introduces visitors to the history and architecture of the University of Helsinki’s City Centre Campus.
Previously the only University campus, the City Centre Campus now serves as a home for the Faculties of Art, Educational Sciences, Law, Theology, Social Sciences and the Swedish School of Social Science.
On this walking tour you will be introduced to the Campus, the history of the University of Helsinki and to the different University buildings all situated conveniently on an area covering just couple of blocks, right at the centre of the capital.
The University buildings are among the oldest in the city and styles vary from 19th century neoclassicism to 21st century contemporary architecture.
Hence this tour is also an excellent way to get an overall idea of the architectural history of Helsinki.
Please arrive at the meeting point approximately 5–10 minutes before the tour begins. The tours take place regardless of the weather.

Dj.Börje, Bore Wanner, s.1948 on toiminut tiskijukkana jo vuodesta 1970. Hän kuuluu discoalan uranuurtajiin Suomessa. Wanner toimi ammattitiskijukkana lähes 20 vuotta aina 1980-luvun loppuun asti. Keikkoja maestrolla vuosittain yli 300. Lämpimästi tervetuloa tanssimaan ja viihtymään.

Lullabies, traditional songs, and voodoo melodies intertwine in this major installation at Kiasma, bringing to life the atmosphere and acoustics of a prehistoric cave. The immersive video opera is filmed in Font-de-Gaume, an archaeologically significant cave in southwestern France renowned for its hundreds of prehistoric paintings.
The Cave brings together eight singers from across the globe. Musicians Rufus Wainwright, Woodkid, eee gee, Mélissa Laveaux, Hamed Sinno, Jean-Christophe Brizard, Mo’Ju, and Michiko Takahashi were each invited to perform the earliest song they could remember from childhood. Each singer performs in tune with the cave’s harmonics, their voices naturally amplified by the cave and weaving together in the gallery space into a haunting polyphony meticulously recomposed by Beer.
The installation comprises 16 audio channels and eight monumental video projections arranged throughout the exhibition space. Together, the singers’ voices resonate across the gallery, evoking the experience of a cave that only a handful of people will ever have the chance to visit.

The word konst means art, and rundan means tour.
Konstrundan will be organised for the 19th time this year. The event weekend brings together almost 430 artists, craftspeople, designers and artist residencies from across the country.
This year’s participants include both well-known names and exciting new practitioners across a range of art forms.
Participants will open their studio doors to the public, offering a unique opportunity to meet artists and gain insight into their work.

Join us for the presentation of SCAM , a powerful new novel about Russia's war against Ukraine by Ukrainian playwright, war veteran, and combat medic Alina Sarnatska . Published by Vydavnytstvo in April 2026, SCAM marks the author's striking fiction debut.
Most war novels ask how people fight. SCAM asks how people continue living.
Lenka works at InstantCASH in a provincial town, handing out other people's money while dreaming of a holiday by the sea and a pair of gold earrings. Her husband, Kostian, is preparing for deployment to eastern Ukraine and dreams of love. Alisa, a combat medic at an improvised frontline medical station, dreams of returning home to a rescued cat and an ordinary office job.
Told through three interconnected voices, SCAM follows people struggling to preserve their everyday hopes and aspirations while war steadily dismantles the structures that make those dreams possible.
The event will feature a conversation between Alina Sarnatska and Liliia Omelianenko , publisher at Vydavnytstvo. It will be held in Ukrainian with consecutive interpretation into English .
About the author
Alina Sarnatska is a Ukrainian playwright, writer, PEN Ukraine member, PhD in Social Work, and war veteran who served as a combat medic during Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Her work has been staged at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm and Schauspiel Stuttgart, presented at Yale University, and featured by The Guardian and The Observer .

The second Aria Borealis International Baroque Singing Competition will take place in Helsinki in October 2026. Following the video pre-selection round, eight singers have been chosen to advance to the live rounds. They will compete in the chamber music semifinal on 2 October and the final on 4 October. Representing eight different countries and voice types ranging from coloratura soprano to bass-baritone, the finalists can be explored in more detail here: https://fibo.fi/en/etusivunuutiset/aria-borealis-competition-finalists/

The semi-staged final consist of a ‘pasticcio’ of Georg Friedrich Händel operas and oratorios titled The Transforming Fire, conceived by writer-director Aleksi Barrière and featuring many beloved arias from the master’s catalogue. The eight singers, for whom the pasticcio was specially crafted, will lend their voices to a montage of scenes showcasing Händel’s interest in the psychology of transformation, whether in the form of love, grief, or resilience. The high-profile International Maj Lind Piano Competition will be bringing around 40 young keyboard virtuosi from all over the world to Helsinki in October 2027.
The lucky competition applicants will play a wide selection of familiar classical works, but also more recent repertoire.
The competition goes back a long way. It is named after its benefactress, Maria “Maj” Lind (née Kopjeff, 1876–1942), a keen amateur music-lover.
The first Maj Lind Competition in 1945 was a national one. It became international in 2002 and has been organised once every five years by the Sibelius Academy of Uniarts Helsinki. The International Maj Lind Piano Competition held in 2017 was won by US pianist Mackenzie Melemed.

The exhibition unfolds like a dream: fragmentary and wondrous, interweaving fantasy and reality. Meanings shift and shimmer, like in dreams themselves, which transcend everyday comprehension. Visitors encounter a space where the possible and impossible hover side by side, evoking experiences that words cannot fully capture.
The exhibition presents works from the Finnish National Gallery’s collection, which holds over 43,000 works in total. It features around 40 artists, including Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Riikka Anttonen, Milla Aska, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Bruce Nauman, Olli Lyytikäinen, Elina Merenmies, Pakui Hardware, and Cindy Sherman.

The Sápmi region, which today spans four countries, existed long before the emergence of Nordic nation-states or national ideologies. The exhibition invites viewers to explore Sámi identity as expressed by the Sámi themselves. The exhibition highlights the complexities of Sámi experience, showing how Sámi identity endures and remains vibrant despite externally imposed pressures.
Curated by Saami Rights advocate, essayist and musician Petra Laiti, the exhibition features more than 20 artists and works created from the 1970s to the present day. The exhibition presents contemporary art by and about the Sámi community across the Sápmi territories of Finland, Sweden, and Norway.

Kiasma Online Art is the web extension of Kiasma’s Collection. It is an internet experience and tribute to today’s online art-makers.
A growing amount of art is being created exclusively for online environments, social media platforms, blogs and mobile apps. Kiasma Online Art is a compendium of topical online works by contemporary artists.
The audience plays an active role in many of these works, which include everything from gaming-based art, a VR film and digital paintings to a Random Number Generator that writes poetry and a mixing platform inviting users to create their own soundscapes.
Kiasma Online Art takes the art beyond the walls of the museum, making the online collection accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere. It marks a paradigm shift in the way that art is created, presented and experienced. What happens when art is encountered not in a museum, but online? Is the experience entirely different when art is accessed via smartphone on a crowded bus or on the sofa at home? Can art spread in the form of internet memes?

Photographer Eino Partanen (1902–1962) recorded the Viipuri theatre scene for a period of ten years 1929–1939.
The online exhibition Emotions and Elegance leads the visitor across decades, in the middle of the of vibrant theatre scene of the buoyant Viipuri.
Emotions and Elegance exhibition conveys, true to its title, the emotions provoked in the audience, and the elegance of a soirée at the theatre.

This online exhibition explores ancient Greek tragedies performed on stage in Finland. It spans four decades, from the 1980s to 2013.
Within the timeline of this exhibition, more than twenty performances of Greek tragedies were staged in Finnish theatres reflecting an international trend.
The 2500 years old texts have lent themselves to a variety of experimentations in theatre aesthetics. The chorus, masks, texts in verse composition, and their timeless themes have challenged and inspired theatre artists.
The structure of the online exhibition follows that of the Theatre Museum exhibition (Tragedy in Time – Timeless Tragedy, 2013–14), which was divided into two main themes, Agora and Ecstasy. These themes are explored through photographic materials, video recordings, interviews, masks, programme leaflets, and tragedy voices i.e. text extracts.

Galaktisen Keskustoimiston virkamiehet ovat huomanneet luonnonsuojeluksi kutsutun ilmiön lisäävän suosiotaan, mikä ei sovi Keskustoimiston suunnitelmiin. Niinpä paikalle lähetetään Starman (Martti Suosalo), tähtienvälinen soturi, joka tunkeutuu frogstimulantin voimalla monologiesitykseen laittamaan asiat kuntoon.
Starman on hurmaavan satiirinen ja ajankohtainen näytelmä luonnosta ja sen monimuotoisuuden vaarantumisesta. Näytelmässä luuppi siirtyy paikkoihin, joissa luonnon tilasta ja ihmiskunnan kohtalosta keskustellaan. Valokeilassa avautuvat vuorollaan Metsätalousmies, Aktivisti, Varpunen ja Biologi. Päällimmäisenä hämmentää tähtienvälinen viskaali Starman, jolla on kova yritys vaikuttaa keikan kulkuun ja kenties koko ihmiskunnan kehityksen…
Luontokadon problematiikkaa pohtiva Starman sai alkunsa loppuvuodesta 2022 Juha Kauppisen ja Martti Suosalon keskusteluista.
Martti Suosalon näyttelemänä ja Raila Leppäkosken ohjauksessa monologi taipuu minimalistisin vedoin sarjaksi viiltäviä, ajankohtaisia puheenvuoroja, joiden verevänä ytimenä ovat Suosalon virtuoosimaiset näyttelijäntaidot.

The Angeloscope exhibition sheds light on people’s conceptions of angels through Hanne Kiiveri's photographic art and multidisciplinary research.
How to study and imagine angels? Do angels have gender? Are angels always good? Do humans turn into angels after death?
The exhibition offers insights into angelic notions by introducing visitors to the Whose Angels? research project, which revolves around photographic works by photographer Hanne Kiiveri.
They weave a tapestry of angelic notions by both the subjects photographed and those viewing the photographs; of references to art and cultural history; and of the efforts of a multidisciplinary research group headed by Professor of the Study of Religions Terhi Utriainen.
The exhibition demonstrates how the study of angelic images advances understanding of not only angelic notions, but also, more broadly, humanity, creativity, imagination and ways of knowing.
Inspired in 2020 by Professor Utriainen’s research journal ‘Enkeleitä työpöydällä’ (‘Angels on the desk’), Kiiveri created a piece entitled Wicca & Her Guardian. Kiiveri has also drawn ideas for her works, for example, from those of Irish mystic Lorna Byrne, and treasures of art history, including works by Hugo Simberg.

The Modern Classics series of exhibitions presents 20th-century artists from the Finnish National Gallery collections. The first artist to be featured in the series is Elga Sesemann.
Elga Sesemann’s (1922–2007) life story is an exceptional and interesting example of a professional woman artist making a career for herself in Finland.
The artist’s very first solo exhibition in Helsinki, in 1945, already drew the attention of critics and the art audience to her expressive style.
Sesemann’s artistic oeuvre is extensive, and she enjoyed an active career, with her expression constantly evolving, until the mid-1990s.
