The Funky Fossils Collective’s 10th-anniversary celebration features choreographies created for the group and collaborative productions from over the years, as well as a new anniversary choreography.
The Funky Fossils Collective celebrates the diversity of dance and invites people of all ages to come and dance and be inspired at a new kind of dance event: It is never too late to start!
Funky Fossils emerged out of dance classes run by dancer and choreographer Njara Rasolomanana in 2016. Since then, the hip-hop group has performed at his dance school’s shows at various events. In recent years, the group’s season has culminated in a Christmas show at Dance House Helsinki.
In 2024, the Funky Fossils Crew became an independent collective operating as a network of adult hip-hop dance enthusiasts. Its aim is to enable as many street dance enthusiasts as possible to dance, become part of the community and create projects that reflect their own personalities.
The titular fossils are born out of fusions of different dance styles, and the group has combined hip-hop with genres such as Afro dance, folk dance and jazz dance, under the guidance of choreographers. The movement language of the dancers in the Fossil group shows influences from various styles of hip-hop: breakdancing, locking, house and popping.
