Airy begins with a question: how can we sense what a machine is trying to do when its code remains hidden? Industrial robotic arms lift and snap a sheet of silk as two dancers move with and against them. A projected forest climbs from ground to open sky. Mist gathers when their timing slips and clears when they find a rhythm again. The dancers of TAO Dance Theater do not explain the machines. Through weight, touch, hesitation and recovery, they test how trust is made and lost between human and mechanical bodies. Baoyang Chen stages these encounters to explore how machine agency can become readable without becoming transparent. Through robotic installations and multi-agent systems, he sets up situations in which audiences interpret and negotiate machine intent through movement, materials and sensory metaphors—legibility that remains situated, partial and open to misreading.
Airy was developed and presented at art district 798, a cultural icon of contemporary Chinese art and a global platform for artistic exchange, public engagement and cultural innovation.
