As part of the nextcomic festival, students from the MKD – Master School of Communication Design Linz designed the façade of the Ars Electronica Center. With the watchful gaze of large-scale eyes, pulsating data streams, and the question “Am I AI?”, they transformed the museum into an empathetic entity for one hour each evening, inviting passersby to engage with topics such as surveillance, data hunger and digital privacy.
With the question "Am I AI?", the façade projection Luminous Patterns explores the fluid boundary between human autonomy and Artificial Intelligence. As a contribution to the next Comic Festival 2026, which reflected on the foundations of democratic participation under the motto “My Decision, Your Decision,” the work by the Master’s School for Communication Design (MKD) at HTL1 Linz poses the central question: Who decides? The individual or AI?
In 15 animations, various AI themes are visually interpreted: While large-scale eyes transform the Ars Electronica Center into a supposedly empathetic entity, thereby questioning the strategy of AI appeasement through deliberate humanization, watchful gazes, pulsating data streams and unlocking locks make the themes of surveillance, data hunger and the struggle for digital privacy visible directly on the urban membr...
